Project 68

Challenge Question

How can we make golf carts used in retirement communities cleaner, safer, and easier to maintain?

Partner: KPM Power

Project Summary

ycn dots

Electric golf carts are often used by seniors to increase mobility, allowing them to access locations and resources more easily and get around their properties, particularly in northern or retirement communities. These carts often use old lead acid batteries, which require regular charging and maintenance and are often inefficient or inconvenient for users. The goal of this project is to provide a way to convert golf carts to use lithium cell batteries, which are lightweight, have a high charge capacity, and are rechargeable. This switch will make golf carts cleaner and safer for users and will decrease cart maintenance for communities. The research team will also explore implementing features such as tracked battery and other data, and should have backgrounds in electrical, computer, and/or mechanical engineering; app/software development; sustainable energy; and issues relating to aging populations and their needs. This challenge originated from the KPM Power website, and team members will be working with a York University mentor rather than a mentor from the organization.
