2016 TLN TeleLatino Essay Prizes Awarded
The Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLAC) at York University and TLN Telelatino is pleased to announce the winners of the 2016 TLN Telelatino Essay Prize in recognition of outstanding scholarly papers in any area of study on the experiences of the Latin American diaspora.
At the undergraduate level, three essays earned prizes this year. First prize was awarded to Susana Véliz (Schulich School of Business) for her excellent paper “Ecuador: A Country with Ongoing Allegiance to Colonial Customs and Traditions.” Second prize was shared between two honorees: Thomas Stratan (Glendon College) for his paper “Alex Véliz y la cuestión de la ‘doble identidad’” and Yuriko Matayoshi Franco (Glendon College) for her paper “Ambivert Lucía: La niña que tenía miedo a ser diferente.” In addition to these prizes, Christine Gotera earned an honorable mention for her paper “Pupusas: A Salvadoran Tradition.”
The essays were evaluated by two committees of CERLAC Fellows. All of these award-winning papers are available online on CERLAC’s TLN Telelatino Awards page.
All nominated papers represent high-calibre scholarly work at their authors’ respective levels of study and merit recognition as worthy of candidacy for this prize.
The TLN Telelatino prize was established in 2009 by a donation made to York University by TLN Telelatino, a Canadian television channel that broadcasts programs of interest to the Hispanic and Italian communities.
If you are a York faculty member please encourage your students to send their papers to CERLAC: cerlac@yorku.ca
Congratulations to all of this year’s nominees and to the three 2016 TLN Telelatino Prize winners!
