CELADEC published a variety of series on current events and historical injustices from a liberation theology vantage point, and it often did so with the collaboration of prominent intellectuals from the region and elsewhere. The topics of those publications ranged widely, from human rights abuses and the civil wars in Central America to racist content in school texts in Latin America and the Caribbean to popular education pamphlets.

Iglesias 1981 Nov. – 1998 Oct. (4 boxes) – presents monthly information and analysis on the role of the church in Mexico, Latin America, and internationally, focusing on current events and the ideological debates among different sectors of the Catholic Church, with occasional articles on other Christian churches. CENCOS’ engagement in collective monitoring and analysis of current events was an example for others. Specifically, the work of CENCOS served as a model for Canadian church activists and inspired the creation of the Canadian News Synthesis Project.

Comunidad Teológica Evangélica de Chile (Lutheran)
Vicaría de la Solidaridad, an agency of the Catholic Church’s Archdiocese of Santiago in Chile, was created in 1976 to document the human rights abuses taking place in Chile and to provide services of solidarity during the Pinochet dictatorship. As it was created under the auspices of the Vatican and Pope Paul VI, it provided the only safe place for this work. It ceased operations on December 31, 1992 after the transition to a democratic government. A description of the work of the Vicaría (prepared by CERLAC and other Canadian institutions) is on top of the banker’s box in row 2, shelf 5. A very large number and variety of Vicaría documents are available in the Resource Centre.

Church in Latin America – CELAM III (Puebla, Mexico) – Box 94
CELAM – Consejo Episcopal Latinaoméricano (Latin American Bishops’ Council) met first in 1955 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (CELAM I), then in 1968 in Medellín, Colombia (CELAM II) where it adopted Vatican II resolutions and the Theology of Liberation as the overall orientation of the Catholic Church in Latin America, and finally Puebla, Mexico (27 January-13 February 1979), where liberation theology was for the most part abandoned (CELAM III) as the guiding orientation. The many files listed below contain a great deal of material on CELAM III and, particularly, on the preparations for those meetings (including the proposals of grass roots organizations, intellectuals, etc.), the presence and interventions of Pope John Paul II, and the debates that followed the Puebla meetings. Canadian participation and commentary is incorporated into the files.

To Reiterate, Please Note that there is a great deal of material on the Latin American churches in boxes in the LAWG Library room. In addition to the files listed above, the country boxes in the LAWG Library room have church files (e.g., Church in El Salvador in box 26).
For additional material on Canadian church solidarity with Latin America, see also the files in the Human Rights Section “D” and the Solidarity Section “S”.
