Mandate

The Centre for Feminist Research/ Le Centre de recherches féministes is an internationally recognized Center for research on gender, race, class, indigeneity, disability, sexuality, and women’s issues. Its mandate is to promote feminist activities and collaborative research at York University by working to establish research linkages between York scholars and local, national, international and transnational communities. CFR carries out its mandate by supporting individual and collaborative research, developing research materials, communicating research results, providing opportunities and training for graduate students, fostering relationships with community organizations and government personnel, and through hosting visiting scholars from outside the university.

Established in 1991 as one of the earliest international centres for feminist research, CFR has taken a leadership role in national and international feminist research. It draws on the expertise of more than three hundred members from 20 departments at York University. CFR also hosts collaborations with more than 17 Canadian and international universities, and more than 35 community groups.

CFR administers research grants for faculty, organizes research projects, conferences, seminars, and public lectures. Additionally, CFR produces a weekly newsletter that highlights feminist related activities at York and in Toronto. Please email cfr@yorku.ca to be added to our low-traffic list-serv—and we’re always looking for information about upcoming events and any news items you may have.

The Center aims to disseminate knowledge on feminist research to wider local, national and international communities. Such links, we hope, will make intellectual knowledge available to local communities for discussion and activism. By providing a forum for the exchange of this knowledge, we hope to bring feminist research to an ever-increasing sphere of public and private life.
