BACKGROUND
The February 6 earthquake in Türkiye and Syria was one of the deadliest disasters on the 21st century. It impacted several regions in these countries. Close to 60,000 people were killed and more than 120000 people were injured. About 2 million people were directly affected by the earthquake. Various countries and organizations have responded to the 6 February earthquake. At least 105 countries and 16 international organizations pledged support for victims of the earthquake, including humanitarian aid. Canadian NGOs and Government responded to this disaster among other countries.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The key goals and objectives of the two part symposium are to:
- Examine Canada’s response to the 6 February 2023 earthquake in Türkiye and Syria
- Share experiences and lessons learned
- Understand challenges of Canadian agencies in providing humanitarian and emergency response to this earthquake
- Learn about different Canadian NGOs, Government and Private Sectors response to the disaster

The IAEM-Canada Council encompasses members from every Province and Territory in Canada in addition to the Committee representatives from numerous professions in public, private and government entities across the country.
The IAEM-Canada Region became the first region outside the United States in 2003 under the previous IAEM structure.
