December 13th – York Anthropology Professor Karl Schmid has been named the recipient of Public Anthropology’s prestigious Eleanor Roosevelt Global Citizenship Award. Congratulations Karl!

December 2010 – CITY Faculty Associate Gene Desfor had a new book published: Transforming Urban Waterfronts: Fixity and Flow.

November 30th- The Homeless Hub released a new post about how we have incorporated social media into our strategy to mobilize research on homelessness, so that it has a greater impact on policy and practice. The Homeless Hub.

November 24th – CITY Faculty Associate Leah Vosko had her Canada Research Chair (CRC) renewed, allowing her to continue her research on the political economy of gender and work. Congratulations Leah! York Media Relations.

November 1, 2010 – CITY is pleased to welcome a new Postdoctoral Fellow. Will Poppe has taken over from Amy Siciliano as the Postdoctoral Fellow working on the “Suburban Redevelopment and Tower Renewal” research project, that is part of the MCRI on “Global Suburbanisms”. Will has a Ph.D. in Geography from the University at Buffalo (SUNY).  His areas of interest encompass urban, social and cultural geography.

October 26th – Roger Keil was featured in an article in today’s Globe and Mail discussing the results of the mayoral election and the issue of subway expansion in the city of Toronto.

October 26th – In conjunction with Environmental Defence and the Toronto Greenbelt Alliance, Robert MacDermid (CITY Faculty Associate) helped prepare a report entitled “Under the Influence: Election Financing in Ontario’s Greenbelt”. October 26th – CITY is pleased to welcome a new visiting scholar to the Institute. Sebastian Schipper is a PhD Candidate in the Department for Human Geography, Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main (Germany). His research focuses on the neoliberalization process of urban politics from the 1960s until now with special focus on the impact of the current economic crisis.Sebastian will be here from October 2010 to March 2011. Please join us in welcoming Sebastian to CITY.

October 26th – Roger Keil was quoted in the Globe and Mail regarding the mayoral election and the issue of subway expansion in Toronto.

October 23rd – Roger Keil was featured in two online publications, Le Devoir.com and Pieuvre.ca regarding the Toronto Mayoral Election.

October 21st – Ute Lehrer was quoted in the Toronto Star, discussing the naming of condominium developments in Toronto.

October 2010 – The National Film Board (NFB) has launched their newest work by celebrated Canadian documentary maker Katerina Cizek. The project entitled HIGHRISE/Out My Window is an interactive documentary made for the internet, which features families viewing the world from their highrise balconies. To view this exciting project, please visit the HIGHRISE website. The NFB is a partner of the MCRI project Global Suburbanism, a multinational research team.

October 17th – CITY member and PhD student Heather McLean’s article Competitive Creativity? Arts and Culture in Toronto’s Mayoral Debates was featured in The Socialist Project Bullet.

October 13th – York professor and CITY member Stephan Kipfer’s article The Hordes at the Gate? Hard-Right Populism Defines Toronto Mayoral Election, was featured in The Socialist Project Bullet.

October 5th – York professor and CITY member Anders Sandberg’s new book entitled Climate Change – Who’s Carrying the Burden?: The Chilly Climates of the Global Environmental Dilemma was featured in today’s Y-File. The book, co-authored with York Master’s student Tor Sandberg, looks at who is most affected by climate change and the need for systematic change beyond capping and trading carbon emissions.

September 30th – Roger Keil, Director of CITY, was featured in NOW Magazine regarding public service, public ownership and the trend of customer service in the city of Toronto.

September 30th – Sebastien Darchen, a professor in York’s Faculty of Environmental Studies, spoke about a special transportation tax levied by Portland, Oregon, and whether it would work in Toronto, on Radio-Canada.

September 29th – York professor and CITY member Laurence Packer’s video on how to be bee-friendly in your backyard was featured in today’s Y-File.

September 29th – The report co-authored by Stephen Gaetz was featured in today’s Y-File. The report found that being homeless exposes people to not only dangerous places, but people.

September 28th – York professor and CITY member Stephen Gaetz was featured in today’s Y-File regarding the report Surviving Crime and Violence: Street Youth and Victimization in Toronto, led by Gaetz and Guelph professor Bill O’Grady. The findings of the report reveal that street youth are victimized frequently, in large part due to the vulnerabilities that young people face when they are homeless.

September 20th – York professor and CITY member Robert MacDermid was featured in today’s Y-File commenting on the reluctance of Toronto mayoral candidates in releasing names of their donors until the law requires them to do so after the election.

Fall 2010 – CITY is pleased to welcome a new Postdoctoral Fellow and a visiting scholar to the Institute. Amy Siciliano has joined us for as a Postdoctoral Fellow working on the “Suburban Redevelopment and Tower Renewal” research project, that is part of the MCRI on “Global Suburbanisms”. Also, Miriam Alfie-Cohen is a visiting scholar here from from the Department of Social Sciences, UAM-Cuajimalpa, Mexico and is working on on a research project comparing environmental governance between Canada and Mexico. Please join us in welcoming Amy and Miriam to CITY.

September 16th – Robert MacDermid comments on pre-election politics and the length of the campaign period in today’s Y-File.

September 2nd – Douglas Young (Social Science) was awarded a Standard Research grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to explore the legacies of 20th century socialist urbanism in three cities – Berlin, Hanoi and Stockholm. August 13th – Peer Zumbensen was featured in today’s Y-File regarding his recent publication Rough Consensus and Running Code: A Theory of Transnational Private Law.

August 5th – Graduate Student Exchange (Frankfurt 2010-2011). The City Institute at York University (CITY) and the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies in cooperation with York’s Faculty of Environmental Studies and the Department of Geography offer one or two study abroad opportunities for York graduate students to spend one or two semesters during the 2010-11 academic year at the Department of Human Geography, Goethe University Frankfurt (Germany). Summer 2010 – CITY is pleased to welcome two visiting scholars to the Institute. Dr. Susanne Heeg is professor in urban geography at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. She will be here in June and July to conduct interviews with different real estate actors about their spatial strategies. Tino Petzold is a Junior Research Fellow and a Masters Candidate at the Goethe-University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Tino will be here from July to October. Please join us in welcoming Susanne and Tino.

June 24th – Gail Fraser’s (Faculty of Environmental Studies) presentation on the need for tougher environmental laws to the Sanding Committee on Natural Resources in Ottawa was featured in today’s Y-File.

May 31st –  Laurence Packer’s new book “Keeping the Bees: Why All Bees Are at Risk and What We Can Do to Save Them” was featured in today’s Y-File.

May 18th – The “Global Suburbanism” research project was featured in today’s Y-File.

May 14th – CITY member Simon Black’s article on life in the “in-between city” was featured in today’s Toronto Star.

May 10th – CITY is pleased to welcome Judy Patla as a Research Administrator to the Institute. Judy has an undergraduate degree in psychology from York University and will be working with both CITY and the Canadian Business Ethics Research Network (CBERN). Please join us in welcoming Judy to CITY.

May 5th – Gail Fraser (Environmental Studies) commented on Canada’s environmental regulation of offshore oil and gas in the Globe and Mail.

April 29th – Roger Keil comments on the impact of removing funding for the TTC’s Transit City plan in Now Magazine.

April 22nd – Marc Stein (History, Women’s Studies) wins a Faculty of Graduate Studies Teaching Award. For details, see today’s Y-File.

March 2010 – The “In-Between Infrastructure” research project released a new brochure detailing project results.

March 28th – CITY member Simon Black’s opinion piece on the recent Ontario budget, and its impact on the province’s welfare system was featured in today’s Toronto Star.

March 23rd –  Roger Keil (Faculty of Environmental Studies) was awarded a $2.5 million Major Collaborative Research Initiative (MCRI) grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to examine global suburbanization. A multinational research team involving 44 researchers at 29 universities, and 16 partners in 12 countries will seek to better understand the challenges suburbanization poses in a globalizing world.

Based on the experience of Canadian suburbanization, but ranging from North America’s wealthy gated communities to Europe’s high-rise-dominated suburbs, the exploding outskirts of Indian and Chinese cities to the slums and squatter settlements of Africa and Latin America, this project is the first to systematically take stock of worldwide suburban developments while analyzing their governance models, land use, infrastructure and suburban everyday life.

March 2010 – The City Institute is pleased to announce the establishment of our External Advisory Board. The Board consists of members from public life, the private sector, the arts and from Toronto’s diverse communities who have shown enthusiasm for or have accomplishments in the urban realm broadly defined. March 10th – Professor Emeritus John Warkentin (Geography, York University), recently published a new book entitled “Creating Memory: A Guide to Outdoor Sculpture in Toronto”. Toronto has over 600 public outdoor sculptures, works of art that provide a sense of the rich variety of life and work in the city, its peoples, cultures and aspirations. This is a book about the sculptures and how they disclose the city to itself. Click here for more information and to order the book.
