About the book
By Us! For Us! counters the mainstream narrative about the community of Jane-Finch in Toronto. It is a story of courage, advocacy, belonging, and grassroots activism that confronted racism, neglect, and unacceptable political and bureaucratic decisions. This resulted in a lack of social infrastructure and economic marginalization.
By Us! For Us! is dedicated to the courageous and spirited women of Jane-Finch. Women who struggled tirelessly. Women who supported residents as local community agency staff. Women who volunteered on committees and boards of directors. Women who refused to accept government neglect and built community organizations that were needed. Women who fought private developers. Women who challenged school systems. Women who worked diligently to raise their children, while always striving for the best for their community.
