PRESS RELEASE: David Miller Takes Key Leadership Post in C40 Cities Network

Former Mayor of Toronto and environmental leader will advance the fight against climate change in North American cities

New York City, USA (04 October, 2017) – David Miller, former mayor of Toronto and celebrated climate campaigner, will join C40 Cities in the role of North America Regional Director and C40 Ambassador for Inclusive Climate Action. Miller will build momentum around the pioneering initiatives that cities in the US and Canada are taking to tackle climate change. His leadership will advance the renewed drive for climate action led by US cities, states, businesses and civil society in the face inaction by the US federal government on the issue.

During his tenure as Mayor of Toronto, David Miller served as C40 Chair from
2008 to 2010, strengthening the network and putting cities on the global stage for their climate leadership. Under Miller’s leadership, Toronto became a city widely admired internationally for its environmental programs and policies, economic strength and social integration. He is a leading advocate for the creation of sustainable urban economies, and a strong and forceful champion for creating the next generation of green jobs.

Since 2013 Miller has served as President and CEO of World Wildlife Fund
Canada.

“C40 was founded by mayors and has always been led by mayors. Therefore, it is a great benefit for the cities of North America, that C40’s work in the USA and Canada will be led by David Miller, a former mayor of Toronto,” said Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris and Chair of C40. “David’s unique expertise will be particularly valuable at this critical time for climate action in North America.”

“I am thrilled to join the C40 team and lead our efforts in the North American region,” said David Miller. “Mayors are committed to a green and sustainable future because they know it will make their communities cleaner, healthier and more prosperous. Together with business leaders and citizens, they will shape the future of our people, our cities and our planet.”

"David was an inspirational mayor of Toronto and played a pivotal role in creating C40 so it is a tremendous honor that he has now chosen to join us, supporting our member cities in North America,” said Mark Watts, C40 Executive Director. “We will benefit greatly from his experience, his strategic thinking, and his commitment to inclusive and sustainable cities.”
