Scholarship Application Deadline:
Scholarship applications for a full year of study or for one semester should be submitted along with all supporting documentation no later than two weeks prior to the student’s expected departure.
Awards will be announced on a rolling admissions basis.
Financial Need:
All study in Israel scholarships require students to prove financial need. Students must fill out the Student Financial Profile before the March 1st deadline every year and to submit their profile along with their award application.

41 | Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University | Awards are available to graduate and undergraduate students to study and/or conduct research at the Hebrew University. Preference will be given to students who have completed two years at York and who return to York from Israel for at least one year, and who are enrolled in the Jewish Teacher Education program. Recipients must be participating in a York recognized exchange program with the hebrew University and will be selected on the basis of scholarly merit. |
42 | Leonard Wolinsky Israel Study Award | This award is given annually to one or more York graduate and/or undergraduate students for one year of full time study in Jewish Studies at an Israeli university. Preference will be given to students who have completed at least one year at York and who are enrolled in the Jewish Teacher Education program. |
43 | Gertrude Jack Friedman Memorial Award | Established to assist a student in Jewish Studies to pursue a program of study and/or research at an Israeli university. To be awarded to an outstanding student, preferably a graduate student, to pursue study and/or research at an Israely university. Demonstrated financial need may be considered. In the event that in any year no suitable graduate student applies, the award may be given to an outstanding undergraduate student in the field of Jewish Studies or Jewish Teacher Education. |

York undergraduate students in Israel register and pay tuition to their host university. Credits may be counted towards the York degree.
Graduate students must make appropriate arrangements with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
** The Tel Aviv Awards will be granted to students from any Faculty that are studying or undertaking research at Tel Aviv University. The eligible recipients must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, Ontario residents who demonstrate financial need. The award will be granted in preference to the following:
1st – to undergraduate students undertaking a study period (semester or full year) at Tel Aviv University.
2nd – to graduate students undertaking a study period (semester or full year) at Tel Aviv University.
3rd – to assist with costs to graduate students travelling to Tel Aviv University to conduct research (i.e. airfare, hotel accommodations, etc.).
The value of the awards will be granted to the maximum capacity of each endowment’s distribution and it is acceptable that one student receive all four Tel Aviv Awards in a single year to increase the overall funds available.
Application Information
To obtain university entrance information, please contact the addresses given below. All scholarships are open to any full-time York student, who has completed at least one full year at York; they are generally not awarded to students for whom the year in Israel will be their last at York.
For undergraduates, preference will be given to students completing their second year of full-time studies. The academic record of applicants will be given considerable weight. A minimum B average is usually required in order to be considered.
To qualify, students must meet faculty requirements for study abroad, receive approval of their course of study in Israel from their faculty and major department, and be accepted by an Israeli university.
Selection criteria for the scholarships include academic excellence, participation in university life, seriousness of interest, suitability of the host institution’s program for your particular degree requirements, and, where indicated, proof of financial need.
Scholarship Applicants Must Submit:
- A statement of purpose, outlining the projected program of studies in Israel, explaining how that program complements studies at York.
- Official transcripts of all university courses taken.
- Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a York faculty member.
- A copy of your Student Financial Profile
- An official copy of your most recent transcript
