Who are we?

Our organization is the Canadian Cancer Society York University Chapter (CCSYUC). We are a student-run club at York University affiliated with the Canadian Cancer Society, Canada’s largest national cancer charity that funds research, support services, advocacy programs and more. Our chapter is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for cancer research and support services, as well as to promoting healthy lifestyle choices and cancer prevention.

What is Relay for Life?

You may have heard about Relay for Life YorkU!

Relay for Life is our flagship event that brings together the York University community to raise funds and awareness for cancer. During the event, there is food, games, sports, music, and more!

It is also a time to honour and remember those who have been affect by cancer. After the opening ceremony, the event begins with the Survivor Lap, where cancer survivors guide everyone for a lap around the track. For the rest of the event, participants within each team take turns walking around a track, symbolizing the ongoing impact of cancer. Remember, cancer does not stop, and neither should we!

There is also the Luminary Ceremony, where candles are placed in special bags that have the names of cancer survivors or loved ones who have had cancer.

About Relay for Life

Relay for Life is a community fundraising event for the Canadian Cancer Society. It is a time to come together with friends, family, and coworkers to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and rally together against this disease. At Relay, teams of participants take turns walking or running around a track or path for several hours, symbolizing the ongoing journey against cancer.

Relay for Life is the Canadian Cancer Society's largest fundraising event, and has raised over $500 million in Canada since it began in 1999. The money raised goes towards funding groundbreaking research, providing support services to those affected by cancer, and advocating for public policies that will help prevent cancer and save lives.
