The Calumet and Stong Colleges recognize the achievements and hard work of students, student organizations, alumni, fellows, faculty, and staff every academic year. Visit this page to view the past award recipients from previous years.

Leadership and Appreciation Awards

Certificates of appreciation are given to students and student organizations that contributed to the student success of Calumet and Stong Colleges.

Agents of Change provides up to $500 in start-up funds to help students launch their own healthy initiative in the community.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate or Graduate student(s) at York University
  • Good academic standing
  • Groups of 1-5 students (majority from Faculty of Health)
  • Must be available for Master Your Potential Training

Leadership and appreciation awards are offered to executive members of the Calumet College Council (CCC) and Stong College Student Government (SCSG) who contributed to student engagement and the College community. CCC and SCSG represent the students of Calumet and Stong Colleges, respectively. These councils strive to enrich the lives of their respective College student body through social, athletic and community outreach.

Course Representatives are well-trained students who make class announcements to encourage their classmates to engage in their own personal and academic success, liaise with classmates and the course director to improve students’ learning experiences and organize unfacilitated study groups to promote healthy study strategies.

Peer mentoring is offered in collaboration with Calumet and Stong Colleges by the following clubs:

Peer mentoring connects upper-year students to first-year and transfer students to help them transition into university, and connects graduate students and alumni to upper-level students to guide and provide advice about post-graduation career choices.

Value: up to $500

Calumet College offers annual bursaries up to the value of the yearly interest earned on the Calumet Student Assistant Bursary Fund account. The sums granted vary and are divided among a small number of eligible applicants taking into consideration both academic standing and financial need. A minimum 6.00 (B) average is required in at least 24 credits or the equivalent, taken while a student is enrolled in the college.

Value: up to $500

The Calumet College Council established this bursary in 1998. It will be presented annually (selection in the fall) to a Calumet student. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need. Additionally, the recipient will be an active member of Calumet College who was registered in a full course load in the previous year, as a Calumet student, with a minimum grade point average of 5.00 (C+).

Quantity: Varies

Value: up to $1500

The Calumet College Council 50th Anniversary Award will be awarded to students affiliated with Calumet College, as it currently exists, who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, and residents of Ontario, who demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to a continuing student with a minimum B (6.0) grade point average, who has demonstrated commitment to the Calumet College student body and/or the community.

Quantity: 5

Value: $1000

The Calumet College Council established the Student Life Award in 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, for students affiliated with Calumet College. This award recognizes an individual who has contributed to the life of Calumet College through showing exemplary values in their leadership and has actively taken part within the community to enrich the lives of students. Applicants must be affiliated with Calumet College for a minimum of one year by the time of submission, maintain a good academic standing, and demonstrate financial need.

Preference will be given to those who have participated and engaged in multiple Calumet College Council events. If the applicant is a Calumet College Council Member (Directors, Representatives, Webmaster, and Speaker) they must ONLY list events attended that are not required by the Calumet College Council Constitution.

Current members of the Calumet College Council Executive and Calumet College Council Committee Chairs are not eligible to apply for this award and will not be part of the award selection process.


Stong College

Value: up to $1,500

Named in honour of a former Administrative Assistant at Stong, this bursary provides for financial aid to full-time Stong students who have completed at least one full academic term, and demonstrated a high level of commitment and involvement in the college, a serious academic attitude (minimum CGPA of 7.0) and financial need. The bursary is typically awarded in the fall. The bursary provides for Canadian Citizens or landed immigrants.

Value: up to $100 – $1250 each

The Stong College Council 50th Anniversary Award will be awarded to students affiliated with Stong College, as it currently exists, who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, and residents of Ontario, who demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to a continuing student with a minimum B (6.0) grade point average, who has demonstrated commitment to the Stong College student body and/or the community.

Quantity: 3

Value: up to $2000 each

Awarded to three undergraduate continuing students who exhibit leadership qualities, have contributed significantly to student life at Stong College, and have achieved a minimum grade point average of 8.0(A). Recipients must be Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected persons, residents of Ontario and demonstrate financial need.

Value: up to $1000

The entire Stong College community funds the Virginia Rock Award, named in honour of the first Master of Stong College. The successful candidates must be full-time students, will have earned a minimum 8.0 grade average, will have been an active contributor to the College, and will have financial need. The award is thus intended to recognize a distinctive combination of academic achievement and devotion to Stong College and its ideals. The award is advertised early in the school year, and normally given out in October following an interview process. Applicants must be Canadian Citizens or landed immigrants. The committee reserves the right not to give the awards in a given year.

The 20/21 Stong College Student Government (SCSG) established the Heart of a Spartan Award as one way to recognize the dedication of Stong Constituents who are not only present in, but also have had an impact on the SCSG community. Through this award we hope to encourage students to keep coming back, keep having fun, and keep growing within our community. Our goal is to foster the relationships of our constituents. The Heart of a Spartan award is just one of the many ways to say thank you. Applicants must be affiliated with Stong College for a minimum of one year by the time of submission, maintain a minimum GPA of a B (6.0), and demonstrate financial need.

Preference will be given to those who have participated and engaged in multiple SCSG events. If the applicant is an SCSG Council Member (Directors, Representatives, Webmaster, and Speaker) they must ONLY list events attended that are not required by the SCSG Constitution/Contract.

Current members of the SCSG Executive and SCSG Chair Members are not eligible to apply for these awards and will not be part of the award selection process.

Calumet College

This award recognizes a graduating student who has left an enduring legacy in their College with respect to their leadership accomplishments and lasting contributions to the vision of the College. The student will have left an indelible impact empowering others and made a significant positive difference in the community that will continue to thrive and succeed despite their absence.

Eligibility

  • Enrolled in undergraduate studies
  •  Good academic standing (minimum 4.0 cGPA, equivalent to C letter grade) 
  • Affiliated with Calumet College or Stong College
  • Hold a peer leadership position, is a volunteer, or is affiliated in some capacity with Calumet College and/or Stong College. (Please note paid positions will not be considered for these awards. Students must be involved in the Colleges in a voluntary capacity to be nominated for an award.)

This award recognizes a Calumet College-affiliated student-led organization, club or CCSC-affiliated student president or project lead (e.g., Council, Government, department/school-affiliated club, non-department/school-affiliated club) who has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities and skills during their leadership position.  This student, including student organization Presidents (co-president’s or co-leads are encouraged to submit individual applications) or equivalent (e.g., Agents of Change project Lead etc.), demonstrates exceptional communication, collaboration, interpersonal, and community engagement skills. This student has a clearly articulated a distinguishing leadership style and often leads with compassion, empathy, and fairness.  This student has demonstrated significant leadership accomplishments and has notably improved the functioning, cohesiveness, and/or the productivity of their organizational team. This student also contributes to an inclusive Colleges’ community. 

Eligibility 

  • Enrolled in undergraduate studies 
  • Good academic standing (minimum 4.0 GPA, equivalent to C letter grade) 
  • Affiliated with Calumet College or Stong College

Given to a student who continues to go beyond the call of duty. Always with a positive attitude this student shows up regularly, brings their ideas forward, is proactive in addressing student/program needs and delivers projects with grace.

This award recognizes a student or student-led team who has contributed to creating an inclusive College community and their impact aligns with York University’s Decolonization, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (DEDI) Strategy and the Colleges’ Strategic Plan priority of EDI.  This student or team achieved significant milestones over a minimum of one academic year to foster a vibrant, welcoming and inclusive community, as well as lead programming and initiatives that are sustainable and support equity-deserving groups (e.g., historically/structurally/systemically excluded individuals and groups, including racialized,  2SLGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, neurodiverse, physical disability or impairment etc.).  Examples of significant milestones may include, but not limited to, ensuring AODA compliance on communication materials, implementing items on the Action Plan on Black Inclusion (e.g., community engagement), creating space for members of equity-deserving groups to support each other, and identifying and addressing potential barriers for equity-deserving groups involvement in the Colleges’ community.  This student or team also has demonstrated the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate through and lead in a diverse Colleges’ community.

Faculty of Health Scholarships and Awards

Awarded to a graduating undergraduate student in the Faculty of Health who has demonstrated academic excellence and outstanding contributions to undergraduate student life at York University. Students are nominated by their School or Department.  Each School/Department will prepare the nomination file(s) to reviewed by the Committee on Examinations and Academic Standards.

Awarded to a graduating undergraduate student in the Faculty of Health for outstanding academic achievement. The medal is presented to the student with the highest cumulative grade point average in the graduating class.Students are nominated by their School or Department.  Each School/Department will prepare the nomination file(s) to reviewed by the Committee on Examinations and Academic Standards.

Awarded to a graduating undergraduate student in the Faculty of Health who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and potential through involvement and initiative in Faculty of Health organizations and activities.Students are nominated by their School or Department.  Each School/Department will prepare the nomination file(s) to reviewed by the Committee on Examinations and Academic Standards.

Entrance Scholarships

Calumet and Stong Colleges Work/Study Students

This award recognizes a current CCSC Work Study/Student-Staff employee who has exhibited significant initiative and affected measurable outcomes in their role as a student-staff member. The employee has a positive attitude, is punctual, accomplishes their work responsibilities on time meeting high standards, is proactive in addressing program needs and delivers projects with professionalism and a high level of excellence, and has gone above and beyond the expectations of their staff position(s). The employee demonstrates collaboration, collegiality, openness in sharing ideas and valuing different perspectives. The employee may have also made a significant contribution to a particular student success program or student-led initiative. The employee’s accomplishments support and promote the vision, mission, and values of the Colleges: Student-Centric, Collaborative, Mentorship, Engagement, Bold. The employee has left a lasting impact on CCSC programming and initiatives and has furthered the CCSC 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.

This award recognizes alum and/or fellows who have significantly contributed to the advancement of the Colleges’ mandate/strategic plan, engaged our students and community members, elevated the profile of our Colleges and/or Student Success Programs, positively impacted our community and/or were role models that strengthened or redefined leadership and community engagement.

Eligibility

  • Exhibit the values of Calumet & Stong Colleges: Student-Centric; Collaborative; Mentorship; Engagement; Bold
  • Hold a volunteer position, or is affiliated in some capacity with Calumet College and/or Stong College as a volunteer.
  • Has graduated from York University with a degree from any of the academic programs formerly and/or currently affiliated with Calumet College or Stong College OR has collaborated with CCSC to strengthen CCSC’s community, advance their strategic plan, and/or support student experience and success.

Applications for Fall/Winter 2023-2024 Term will open on Monday, February 19, 2024. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 8, 2024, 11:59pm.
