Michael Creal made a member of the Order of Canada

Governor General Mary Simon announced on June 27, 2024, that Professor Michael Creal has been made a member of the Order of Canada. Professor Creal’s long time association with York and the Centre for Refugee Studies was recognized. He is also a founder and leader of the Sanctuary movement in Canada. Professor Creal’s investiture into the Order of Canada will occur on Saturday June 29th at a special ceremony with the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable Edith Dumont.

The Reverend Michael Creal has dedicated more than 50 years to being an educator, activist and faith leader. Now professor emeritus, he has been with York University since its early days and played a significant role in establishing its internationally renowned Centre for Refugee Studies. This Anglican priest and steadfast member of Toronto’s Church of the Holy Trinity has participated in many initiatives to support historically marginalized people, particularly refugees.
