Giovanni Hernández-Carranza

PhD Candidate, Sociology, York University

Giovanni Hernández-Carranza is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at York University. His work is rooted in a philosophical standpoint of coloniality to explore how it shapes people’s understanding and experience of race, nationalism, migration, borders, and citizenship. His dissertation explores the relationalities between refugee claimants and the network of supportive social, civil, legal, and health actors they interact with in Ontario, Quebec, and the U.S. He is also involved in a research project exploring migrant pathways in and out of legality and a project exploring the recognition of Indigenous women’s citizenship acts in Peru.
