Vanessa Ferguson is a PhD Candidate in the health policy and equity program in the School of Health Policy & Management, Faculty of Health at York University. Her research explores the intersections between artificial intelligence (AI), equity and justice for Black communities locally and globally, specifically as it concerns sickle cell disease (SCD). Vanessa received her MA at Queen’s University in the department of Philosophy. Her Master’s thesis explores the ethical implications and limits of SCD research amid the interest in the use of precision medicine (PM) technologies to treat the disease. She is interested in exploring how race and racism functions within healthcare and how to mitigate its implications, especially as the age of AI is upon on. Her research spans health policy, philosophy, AI ethics, machine learning and Black studies.
