The Global Strategy Lab invites highly qualified applicants for a Senior Policy Lead position at York University. This is a full-time, contract position for a term of three years, commencing on September 1, 2024, with the possibility of renewal.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest threats facing humanity today. The overuse of antimicrobial drugs in humans, animals, agriculture, and the environment has rendered antimicrobials less effective. Without these essential health tools, infections that in the past were easily treated are now harder—and sometimes impossible—to treat, contributing to almost 5 million deaths in 2019. By 2050, AMR is expected to cause 10 million deaths annually and cost the global economy $100 trillion.

The AMR Policy Accelerator is an initiative of the Global Strategy Lab, tasked with accelerating global action against AMR through research and policy innovation. We undertake three programs of work: (1) providing Advisory Services to governments, international organizations, and civil society in response to requests for evidence on AMR policy, implementation, and evaluation; (2) work with leading experts in the field to generate actionable Policy Research; and (3) support policy development and research around the world through a suite of Capacity Building programs.

The Senior Policy Lead will be responsible for leading and coordinating policy analysis and research activities, engaging with policy stakeholders, and translating research findings into actionable policy recommendations. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in global health policy, strong analytical skills, and the ability to communicate complex ideas to diverse audiences.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead project teams through the Smart Choice process to help countries prioritize AMR activities for National Action Plans by organizing inclusive policy dialogues.
• Guide project teams in data collection, analysis, and report/manuscript writing for various policy and advisory services, including policy briefs, technical briefs, and commissioned research reports.
• Analyze complex research results and translate them into key messages and visualizations for stakeholders.
• Lead knowledge translation activities such as report writing, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
• Co-lead the development of new partnerships and manage existing partnerships with the Director of Strategy and Partnerships.
• Supervise 1-3 full- and part-time staff supporting activities related to the Smart Choice process.
• Actively contribute to and participate in a dynamic and highly productive team environment.
• Communicate effectively with other team members and key stakeholders.
• Mentor interns as part of the Capacity Building program, aiming to develop and promote AMR knowledge and policy analysis skills among early career policy leaders globally.

Candidate Qualifications:

• Degree: PhD, or PhD equivalent in global health, public health, policy analysis, or a related field.
• At least five years of experience in policy analysis or research, preferably in global health.
• Background knowledge of global health and experience with facilitating policy dialogues are required, and knowledge of AMR highly desired.
• Demonstrated expertise in global health policy and strong analytical skills.
• Experience engaging with policy stakeholders and translating research into policy.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong organizational and project management skills
• Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization in policy work.
• Additional: Experience working in an international context or with international organizations. Familiarity with the policy landscape in global health and public health. Experience in mentoring and supervising staff.

Hiring Policies:

• Annual salary will range from CAD$100,000 – $110,000, depending on the individual’s experience and education. Global Strategy Lab’s commitment to pay equity necessitates that we will not be able to offer a salary outside of the range provided.
• Employer-paid extended health care and dental benefits are provided.
• Global Strategy Lab staff employees are able to participate in York University’s Tuition Fee Waiver Program.
• The successful candidate is expected to work approximately 40 hours per week; this role will require regular travel to facilitate the Smart Choice process and occasional evening and weekend work.
• Hybrid work arrangements are available for team members based in the Greater Toronto Area.
