On April 19, 2018, the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research partnered with CIHR’s Institute of Population and Public Health to host a one-day academic workshop on “Shaping the Global Health We Want: Debating Future Research Needs” at York University.
Over 30 prominent global health researchers and practitioners, including four Canada Research Chairs, participated in the workshop from across academia, public institutions and civil society organizations from across Canada.
The director of the Dahdaleh Institute, Dr. James Orbinski, opened the workshop with a comprehensive presentation on a constellation of contemporary global health challenges as well as the areas of thematic interest for the Dahdaleh Institute.
Each of the workshop participants were subsequently invited to present a bold out-of-the-box idea in a rapid fire ‘three minutes, three slides' format followed by a discussion, organized around five priority research areas: (1) Planetary Health; (2) Global Health and Humanitarianism; (3) Integrative Health and Wellness; (4) Big Science, Health and Human Systems; and (5) Global Health Foresighting.
Dr. Orbinski heralded the workshop as a success for “providing critical analysis and strategic insight into contemporary global health challenges." The meeting, he said, "was useful for each of the participants in their own work, but will also prove vital in shaping the strategic direction of the Dahdaleh Institute.”
