Job Description

Under the supervision of Dr. James Orbinski and Dr. Jennie Phillips, the Digital Response & Digital Ethics in Disasters & Humanitarian Emergencies Research Assistant RAY student will:

• contribute to research projects including (but not restricted to): Digital Contact Tracing during COVID19, Digital Ethics and Governance of Health Data in Complex Humanitarian Emergencies, Digital Response to COVID-19
• use a multiple case study approach to generate holistic understanding of the global impacts of using digital contact tracing measures, from high-income to low-income countries, with special attention paid to vulnerable communities, like refugees and internally displaced populations, that may need these measures more but also be higher risk
• generate insight on the risks and benefits of these contact tracing measures
• establish a foundation for developing guidance mechanisms when digital contact tracing methodologies are deemed a viable solution
• acquire experience in research, academic and non-academic writing, sharing of research, online website maintenance, grant writing, among other skills as opportunities emerge
• be a part of a team of 2-4 people, with support from their supervisor (DIGHR Research Fellow) and primary research assistant

Specific research activities the student(s) be engaged in

• Researching subject matter related to the projects of study (which could involve annotated bibliography)
• Conducting remote interviews and/or note-taking during interviews conducted by the team
• Contributing to writing peer-reviewed articles, practitioner guidance documentation, and online media
• Contributing to and/or maintaining the online project page(s) for the research
• Grant writing support
• Supporting online workshop organization and delivery  

Type of research experience the student(s) will receive

• Critical thinking
• Conducting literature review
• Data collection and analysis
• Research dissemination (preparing presentations and written outputs of research)

Type of training and support that will be provided to the student(s) in carrying out these research activities

• Methodological training on data analysis
• Subject matter training on global health and humanitarianism
• Ongoing supervision
• Regular status meetings with your supervising full-time faculty and DIGHR Director, Professor James Orbinski and Post Doc Fellow, Dr. Jennie Phillips

Qualifications

• Current undergraduate York student. We encourage applicants from diverse programs of study.
• Demonstrated interest in digital technology use for global health and response to disasters, emergencies and complex humanitarian crisis
• Demonstrated skills, experience, and familiarity with conducting literature reviews and research dissemination (peer-reviewed/non peer-reviewed writing)
• Experience in website maintenance, and building a social media presence
• Experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds/cultures
• Excellent communication skills: professional email/phone correspondence, public speaking, and presentation proficiency
• Excellent computer skills (google docs, word processing, email, database management, spreadsheets)
• Demonstrates an eagerness to learn and take on initiative
• Demonstrates thorough attention to detail, organization and a strong sense of pride in their work
• Demonstrates organizational and time management skills
• Strong ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team with researchers, students, and staff
