Call for Application to the 2021 Seed Grant Program for Critical Social Science Perspectives in Global Health Research

The Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research at York University is accepting applications for its 2021 Seed Grant Program for Critical Social Science Perspectives in Global Health. Up to five seed grants worth up to $5,000 CAD each will be awarded. While York graduate students and Fellows are encouraged to participate, the Principal Investigator for each application must be a faculty member at York University.

The Dahdaleh Institute seeks to enable and support a critical social science approach with global public health. While the definition of what constitutes critical research is quite broad, it usually involves the use of critical theory with social justice aims. Critical social science perspectives in global health are transdisciplinary, participatory, experimental or experiential analyses that actively seek greater effectiveness, equity, and excellence in global health. This means engaging directly with global public health actors, structures and systems to transform global public health, while remaining committed to social science theory and methodology.

The purpose of the seed grant is to enable and support critical social science global health research which contributes to the research themes of the Dahdaleh Institute. These themes are: 1) Planetary Health; 2) Global Health and Humanitarianism; and 3) Global Health Foresighting. Applicants are strongly encouraged to learn more about each theme at www.yorku.ca/dighr. The seed grants are also meant to encourage faculty to develop fuller grant proposals for Fall Tri-Council (and other agency or funder) grant submission deadlines. Seed Grant recipients will be invited to present at a future full-day Dahdaleh Institute Workshop on Critical Social Science Perspectives in Global Health.

The Seed Grant Program follows the 2^nd annual York Faculty and Fellow Workshop on Critical Social Science Perspectives in Global Health, held on February 24-25, 2021. With over 40 participants and featuring presentations from previous seed grant recipients, this years’ workshop yielded a variety of perspectives on and avenues for this line of work. The workshop set a starting point for a shared understanding of critical perspectives in global health. The winners of the seed grant will be announced by mid-May.

Please provide a 1-page summary of your proposed research, as well as a budget. Submitted applications should not be more than 500 words, and should address:

1) Objectives of the study

2) Significance and relationship to Dahdaleh Institute’s three research themes

3) Relationship to your existing research

4) Research plan and methods

5) Work already completed or progress made to date

Note 1: All standard York Policies on the conduct of research and use of research funds apply.

Note 2: All applications will be reviewed by an independent committee. For this reason, it is important to make the proposal as clear as possible to an informed, articulate reader who may not know your field.

Eligibility:

• The Principal Investigator for each application must be a member of faculty at York University
• Applicants from across the York University are encouraged to apply. The competition is open to all disciplines and may be a submission by an individual or a team taking an interdisciplinary approach.
• Matching funds from industry, non-profits, or other partners, while not necessary, are of course welcome.
