After seven years as Director of the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research (DI), I will be retiring from York University on January 1, 2025, to become Principal at Massey College, at the University of Toronto.

This fall, I remain full-time at York as DI Director, and will formally retire from York as of December 31, 2024. This will be a period of transition with Professor Mary Wiktorowicz as the Associate DI Director, and with the very able support of Theresa Dinh, our coordinator and our staff, Charlotte Bull and Natalie Paterson. With support from VPRI, the President’s office, and the Faculty of Health, a new director will be appointed.

I could not be prouder of the DI,  and of all that we have accomplished since its inauguration in 2017. Together with an outstanding Executive Committee and staff, we have created a rich, and vibrant research community of over 200 members committed to effectiveness, equity and excellence in global health research.

I look forward to my new role as York Professor Emeritus, and Senior Fellow at the DI, and as Principal at Massey College. Remember, I’m literally a few subway stops away!

With fullest thanks to all for a wonderful seven years, and with very best wishes to all for continued effort and success in improving our Global Health!

Sincerely,

James Orbinski

More information & statement from Faculty of Health Dean, David Peters.

Dear colleagues,

Our esteemed colleague, Professor James J. Orbinski, OC, OOnt, MSC, MA, MD, founding Director of the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research at York University, has been appointed the 7th Principal of Massey College at the University of Toronto. His appointment begins on a part-time basis on September 1, 2024, through to the end of 2024 when he will take on the Principalship in a full-time capacity. More information can be found in the announcement from Massey College: https://www.masseycollege.ca/2024/08/16/announcing-the-7th-principal-of-massey-college/

During his time as Director of the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research, James has delivered visionary leadership advancing York’s interdisciplinary research in global health while raising the profile of York’s expertise on a vast range of global issues including antimicrobial resistance, health disparities, climate change, Indigenous health, humanitarian water engineering, among many others. He made substantial contributions to the establishment of important projects, including CIFAL and Y-EMERGE, as well as the School of Global Health and the proposal for the School of Medicine. James also provided many experiential education opportunities for students as research assistants at the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research and through various symposia.

I am grateful for James’ leadership and vision, and for the many things he has accomplished in his seven years at York. He will be missed but I look forward to new collaborations with him as he pursues innovative ways to support our mutual commitments to the public good and wish him all the best in his new leadership position at Massey College.

Please join me in congratulating James on this wonderful new opportunity and wishing him the very best for success.

With best regards,

David Peters
