Job description

The Dahdaleh Institute has a bold vision for achieving global health for all. A new lab has been created – the Wellness Impact Lab (WIL) – led by Dr. Harvey Skinner, PhD (Senior Fellow) and Susan Harris, MSW (Community Fellow). The aim is to promote integrated health and wellness practices for personal growth and collective action. A key focus is strengthening our personal capacities for skillfully turning toward climate distress as a basis for fostering resiliency and action. Our passion is ‘healing ourselves, healing others, healing our world’.

Under the supervision of Prof. James Orbinski (Director, Dahdaleh Institute) and co-supervised by Prof. Harvey Skinner (Senior Fellow, Dahdaleh Institute), the RAY student will support the work and future development of Wellness Impact Lab for up to 6.5 hours per week.

Student 1 (health promotion, global health, knowledge synthesis, research methods): will focus on a) reviewing the literature on climate change and distress, b) helping design processes (e.g. social media) and materials (e.g. brochures) for youth engagement and c) assisting with knowledge synthesis and program evaluation research.

Specific research activities the student(s) will be engaged in:

a) Climate Cafes
• Help promote (e.g. social media) and facilitate Climate Café with students at York University as well as with participants in the community.
• Assist with the evaluation process for assessing participants’ impact and outcomes of the Climate Cafés
• Assist with the preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed academic journals and in general media (e.g. The Conversation)

b) Interbeing Wellness: Mindfulness Meditation and Qi Gong online guided practices
• Help with the promotion and evaluation of the Fall 2024 10-week Series, and Winter 2025 10-week Series.

c) Dahdaleh Institute Seminars and Presentations
• Assist with promoting and facilitating a three-part series on ‘Eastern Approaches for Wellness Supported by Western Science’. Dahdaleh Institute 1) Acupuncture: Dr Poney Chiang, 2) Mindfulness Meditation: Susan Harris, 3) Qi Gong (Tai Chi): Dr. Harvey Skinner.

d) New Initiatives and Projects
• Provide assistance where needed

Qualifications

• Current undergraduate York student. Applicants from diverse programs of study are encouraged. • Demonstrated skills, experience, and familiarity with conducting literature reviews.
• Demonstrated knowledge of research methods (quantitative and/or qualitative and/or integrative).
• Demonstrated excellent analytic skills for understanding, sorting, and categorizing complex information. Skills and resourcefulness in drawing mind-maps and tabulating information is an asset.
• Demonstrated note-taking, journal-keeping, and filing skills.
• Demonstrated excellent communication skills: professional written and interactive correspondence, public speaking and presentation.
• Demonstrated excellent computer skills (word processing, email, database, spreadsheets, forms, and slides; facility with Office 365 Apps). WordPress editing skills are an asset. Social media communication skills are an asset.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including international and cross-cultural communication. Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team with researchers, students, and staff.
• Demonstrated an eagerness to learn, support, and take on initiative.
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
