Job description

Under the supervision of Dr. Syed Imran Ali and Dr. James Orbinski, the Humanitarian Water Engineering Lab RAY Student (for up to 6 hours per week) will:

  • Support Humanitarian Water Engineering Lab activities including the Safe Water Optimization Tool (SWOT) project and the Humanitarian Water Engineering intensive course
  • Support HWE Lab team members with literature review, knowledge translation, and course development and delivery activities
  • Support the development of written and electronic outputs from lab research activities
Specific research activities the student(s) will be engaged in:
  • Gathering data from international government agencies and research organizations;
  • Compiling and cleaning quantitative and qualitative data in Excel, Word, and other software;
  • Creating and maintaining a structured and annotated bibliographic review of existing literature organizing resources, projects, and individuals;
  • Managing sources using reference management software.
  • Participate in literature reviews and participate in the writing and editing of manuscripts summarizing research.
  • Performing a literature search and bibliographical compilation
  • Supporting the organization and coordination of an expert working group
  • Assisting with planning and carrying out an expert panel meetings
  • Key informant interviews
  • Assisting with the development of knowledge synthesis and translation documents

Type of research experience the student(s) will receive:

  • Critical thinking
  • Conducting literature review; Creating annotated bibliography; Tabulating data;
  • Preparing presentations and written outputs of research; Editing and formatting drafts; Correspondence with partners and workshop invitees;
  • Professional communication, including international and cross-cultural professional interaction and communication
  • Key informant interviews and focus groups and expert panels
  • Gap analysis and articulating research questions & priority-setting

Type of training and support that will be provided to the student(s) in carrying out these research activities:

  • Methodological training on systematic literature reviews
  • Subject matter training on health in humanitarian response
  • Day-to-day supervision by DIGHR Fellow in Global Heath & Humanitarian, Dr. Syed Imran and SWOT Technical Advisor James E. Brown

Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate York student in engineering, health, or science disciplines
  • Demonstrated interest in global health and humanitarianism
  • Experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds/cultures
  • Excellent communication skills: professional email/phone correspondence, public speaking and presentation proficiency
  • Demonstrated skills, experience, and familiarity with conducting literature reviews
  • Excellent computer skills (word processing, email, database management, spreadsheets)
  • Demonstrates an eagerness to learn and take on initiative
  • Demonstrates organizational and time management skills
  • Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team with researchers, students, and staff
  • Demonstrated eagerness to learn, support the team and take on new tasks
