Experiential Education

The Faculty of Science provides a rich diversity of opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in Experiential Education.  Students can explore the ideas covered in class through a variety of experiences — whether they are in the classroom, in a lab, working in a community organization, or a private sector firm.  Experiential Education leads to deeper learning and better preparation for life after graduation, whether that is in the job market or further professional studies.

The Co-op program is available to full-time Science students who are enrolled in the following programs: Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Science, Biomedical Physics (Biophysics), Biotechnology, Chemistry, Data Science, Environmental Biology, Environmental Science, Mathematics for Education, and Physics & Astronomy

An Internship course is available to students who are enrolled as a full-time student in Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Physics (Biophysics), Biomedical Science, Mathematics & Statistics (Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Mathematics for Education, or Statistics), or Physics & Astronomy and:

1) Have at least 9 credits remaining before they enter their work term

2) Meet GPA eligibility requirements specified by each program

3) Have an employment offer for a 4-month (or more) work term
Internships are available to both domestic and international students.

Undergraduate Research

Advance your knowledge by gaining research experience outside the classroom.  Students have the opportunity to learn advanced lab techniques, use sophisticated lab equipment, interact with graduate students, gain in-depth knowledge in a particular field, and actually contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge. At York Science, lab and research opportunities can begin as early as first year.

Bethune College
Bethune College is the “home” for science and engineering students at York. Students in the Faculty of Science and Lassonde School of Engineering are automatically members of the college and have access to a variety of free academic services, such as Peer-Assisted Study Sessions, Peer Tutoring, Seminars and Workshops, Class Representatives, Bethune Writing Centre and Math Help.

Bethune College Council
The Bethune College Council is the student government for York University's Norman Bethune College. The Bethune College Council's mandate is to serve the Bethune community in the provision of social and academic programs and services while ensuring we maintain a strong and representative voice within York University.

Science Student Ambassador Program
A student-based, Science ambassadorship program that educates the external community about the Faculty of Science at York University. The Student Ambassadors are passionate about their time at York, and are willing to share it with others. As ambassadors, we attend recruitment events like the Ontario University Fair to help educate prospective students on the benefits of attending York.

Scholarships

York University and the Faculty of Science offer a variety of scholarship, award, and bursary opportunities for our students. York Science Scholars Award

Consider applying for the Faculty of Science combined entrance scholarship and research placement award, worth $10,000 in total. Our current recipients are doing innovative research in areas ranging from sensory information & perception to regulation of gene expression in Tetrahymena thermophila. Applications are due before March 1st, 2024 at 12:00PM ET

Science Scholarships and Awards

There are a number of Faculty of Science scholarships and awards available for our students. Some require a supplemental application, and some do not. For example, the Faculty of Science entrance scholarship is automatically awarded to Canadian high school students applying to the Faculty of Science with an admission average of 90% or above.
