IN THE MEDIA: Pandemic exposes how social inequities not only wound the marginalized but hurt us all

Faculty of Education professor and Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora Carl James, is best known for his role in gathering groundbreaking data on Black experiences in sectors ranging from education and jobs to interactions with police. He has been avidly following calls to collect race-based disaggregated data on COVID-19.

In a recent Toronto Star article James says that “Race-based data on COVID19 reflects health outcomes for people of different backgrounds, but it should make us have a good look in the mirror about ourselves.” He adds, “if you look at right now and what happens to certain service jobs in terms of this crisis, it’s going to disproportionately impact people based on the education they get.”
