The Ontario government has announced academic streaming in Grade 9 will be ending.
A 2017 study led by Carl James, Professor and Jean Augustine Chair in Education, Community and Diaspora, found that Black students were being streamed into the applied stream at significantly higher rates than other students.
"Black students were not seen as having the capacity to be in gifted programs," says James.
