Graduate Degree-Level Expectations: Master of Leadership & Community Engagement (MLCE) Program Learning Outcomes

Depth and Breadth of Knowledge

  • This degree is awarded to students who have demonstrated understanding of:
    • Differences between leadership models grounded in diverse theoretical and disciplinary perspectives
    • Multiple conceptions of advocacy, policy, community, program design, organizational culture, social justice and innovation
    • How context influence leadership, policy, program design and interpretation, communities, and advocacy
    • Recognize relationships between theory, research, and practice

Research and Scholarship

  • This degree is awarded to students who have demonstrated the ability to:
    • explain differences between approaches to research, data collection, and analysis commonly used in community- based research
    • determine methods and techniques appropriate for answering particular research questions
    • design original research studies to inform organizations and communities
    • create proposals for grants to fund research in organizations and communities

Application of Knowledge

  • This degree is awarded to students who have demonstrated the ability to:
    • analyze leadership and policy enactment using diverse frameworks
    • synthesize implications from research for professional practice, community engagement, and advocacy
    • identify challenges and opportunities for leading community engagement and advocacy

Professional Capacity/Autonomy

  • This degree is awarded to students who have demonstrated the ability to:
    • Enact and analyze leadership in professional organizations and communities
    • Facilitate democratic policy processes
    • Design, implement and evaluate sustainable programs for community engagement and initiatives for change
    • Foster cross sector relationships to enable innovative solutions to community needs
    • Prepare proposals for funding to support programs in organizations and communities

Communication Skills

  • This degree is awarded to students who have demonstrated the ability to:
    • Communicate ideas clearly using a variety of types of media for a range of purposes to diverse audiences.
    • Facilitate and engage productively in collaborative dialogues
    • Translate and mobilize research to diverse audiences

Awareness of Limits of Knowledge

  • This degree is awarded to students who have demonstrated the ability to:
    • Synthesize experiential and academic knowledge to construct personal conceptions of leadership and community engagement
    • Analyze dilemmas in leadership, program design, advocacy and research in and for organizations and communities
