Secondee Hiring 2025-26: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Please answer all questions on the application form as accurately and clearly as possible. The application process is competitive, and there is not one “applicant profile” that is being sought. The Hiring Committee reviews each application carefully and seeks a diversity of complementary experiences within the Faculty of Education. The hiring committee is looking for a wide range of experiences and backgrounds. Applicants should articulate what they hope to gain and can contribute to the Faculty of Education programs.

We are looking for a wide range of complementary experiences and backgrounds. Please review the criteria in the application, which includes being employed as a full-time, permanent teacher/school administrator from partner school boards (see list on the application) with teaching or coaching experience within the last five years.

The Committee is looking for people with recent teaching or coaching experience within the last five years. If you have been teaching in a K-12 setting within our partner boards in that time, you are welcome to apply.

Only people currently employed by one of the listed School Boards are eligible to apply. If you are not eligible, but would like to work with us in contract positions, please see all CUPE-2 job postings at https://cupejobs.uit.yorku.ca

Late applications cannot be considered.

If you have not heard from the Faculty of Education beyond the automatically-generated receipt, there is no need to follow up on your application.

If you did not receive a receipt–on the screen of your computer–you have probably not clicked on the “submit” button. Please complete the application again and remember to click “submit.”

If you are unsure whether your application was sent, please complete the process again and click “submit.” You can indicate at the top of your cover letter that this submission is a duplicate.

No, we only contact those who are being invited for an interview. If you are not contacted by the end of April, you have not been shortlisted for an interview. The application process is competitive, and we receive applications from a number of excellent candidates. We welcome you to apply again in the future.

The number of applicants that we receive each year–and for each position–varies.

We welcome applications from all qualified and eligible candidates. Applicants who are not shortlisted in one year are welcome to apply in later years.

We ask that applicants only follow the application process that is indicated. Please refrain from sending personal emails to individuals who may or may not be on the hiring committee.

We aim for this to be a fair and equitable hiring process, please include your qualifications and experiences in your application package. Spend time to make sure that you haven’t missed anything before you submit.

Please limit your application to the forms and documents that are requested.

Secondees remain employees of their school boards for the duration of their Secondment. The school board continues to pay Secondees and York reimburses them for their salaries. As a result, the salary you earn at the school board will be paid to you as a Secondee.

The Hiring Committee does not offer feedback to applicants. The application process is competitive, and we welcome applications again in future years. Please also note that hiring needs vary each year.

We second teachers on one-year contracts, with the anticipation of renewing for a total of three academic years. Each year is subject to re-invitation, the Secondee’s willingness to return and the School Board’s willingness to extend the contract.

Once the Faculty of Education indicates that they will proceed with hiring a Secondee, additional steps need to be taken before it is guaranteed. Part of this process includes getting permission from the School Board where the Secondee is employed. Contracts are conditional on this agreement.

You may wish to highlight different experiences in each application. Please treat each application as a separate process and indicate relevant experiences based on the specificities of the job posting.

For the 2025-26 academic year, we have one position available. In other years, if multiple positions are available, please submit one application per position.

Secondees could be asked to teach between early September and the end of June. Beyond this, teaching in July and August is not an expectation, but it may be a possibility for those who are interested in doing so.

The Faculty of Education will need to complete additional processes in order to obtain permission before proceeding. The Faculty of Education will communicate with you directly regarding what you need to do when these additional steps have been completed, and once permissions are obtained.
