Professor Carl James nominated for 2024 Canada Immigrant Awards finalists list - Professor Carl James is among the 75 nominees selected for this year’s Canadian Immigrant Awards. Currently voting is on for the Top 25 winners and the voting phase ends June 7. Winners will be announced in August. The award celebrates the untold stories of immigrants who have made a significant contribution to Canada, in a variety of professions. Learn more and vote
Announcement of the Living Legacy Project - The Museum at Campbell River is pleased to announce an exciting new project for the fall of 2024. Entitled the ‘Living Legacy Project’, this 5-month initiative will replace the annual Haig-Brown Writer-in-Residence Program for one year. The Living Legacy Project will examine the ongoing influence of Roderick and Ann Haig-Brown through the work of Celia Haig-Brown and family. From November 2024 to April 2025, Celia will return to the Haig-Brown House to work closely with the Museum in addressing the various aspects of a ‘Living Legacy’. Learn more

Congress 2024 will take place at McGill University in Montréal, Québec. Lesson Plans and Raised Hands: Preparing for September
Location: Glendon Manor Ballroom, Glendon College- York University
Date/Time: May 30, 2024 at 1:00 - 5:30 p.m.
This workshop is geared towards new FSL teachers with an opportunity to network and hear from current teachers in the profession. It is intended to help new FSL teachers to prepare for the first week of September through practical ideas and strategies for future classrooms. This workshop will be held in French. If interested, please contact Jafar Hussain at jhuss@edu.yorku.ca
Student Services Office
The Student Services Office will be meeting with the new Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree students during the first two weeks of May to go over the program requirements, enrolment and to get them ready to start the program at the end of August
Our new Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) BA/BEd students admitted for the May 2024 start will have orientation on May 2 and will begin the program on May 6

- The online registration & enrollment window for S24 closes in May. Check the FGS - Important Dates website for detailed deadlines, or to add/drop courses (https://currentstudents.yorku.ca/registrarial-services)
- Students admitted to a graduate program (diploma option, master’s degree or doctoral degree) must maintain continuous registration, including payment of applicable fees, in every fall, winter and summer term up to and including the term in which all requirements for their program of study are successfully completed (graduation)

PhD Annual Progress Reports - PhD students are reminded to complete their Annual Progress Reports with their supervisors no later than May 31, 2024. Deaf and Hard of Hearing Office
Applications to the Program - Applications to the program closed on March 21. All applications have been reviewed and interviews have been completed. We will have approximately 50 students (new and returning students) joining us in September 2024
Practicum - Both full-time and part-time students are currently out completing their final practicum hours. Students have placements in 8 different school boards
Graduates - Twelve students will be graduating at convocation this June and we had one student graduate in February 2024

UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education Towards Sustainability Charles Hopkins, Executive Coordinator to the UNESCO Chair Katrin Kohl, and co-authors have a new article titled “Envisioning leadership for tomorrow’s collective well-being” in Prospects: Comparative Journal of Curriculum, Learning, and Assessment

ChatGPT erupted into the world of education in November, 2022. Defenders hailed this innovation as a great leap forward for teaching, learning and research. Critics, including some leading names in the field of artificial intelligence, were far more cautious about ChatGPT and related AI inventions. Will these developments enhance or stifle creativity? Will they free students’ imaginations or deepen their dependence on technological tools that are not widely understood?
Panelists from the K-12 and post-secondary educational sectors discuss if, and how, AI can be used creatively in schooling and higher education. As teachers and students grapple daily with these new digital systems, the panelists provide preliminary guidance as to how educators can contend effectively with this major educational challenge.
