Still I rise: The resistance work of Black mother learners in Toronto – In this presentation, which was a part of York U Alumni’s Scholars’ Hub @ Home series, Assistant professor Stephanie Fearon explores the resistance practices of Black Caribbean mothers attending community-based adult learning programs in Toronto. She draws on visual and Black oral storytelling traditions to challenge widely held notions of leadership. Watch video

Alumna Boni Thompson has published a new book While Dragging Our Hearts Behind Us: Cork, 1916-1923, based on her grandfather’s time as a significant part of the 1st Cork Brigade of the IRA during the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921). Read on for how Dr. Thompson combined family history, memoir, and archival research for a gripping and harrowing account of James Fitzgerald’s work for an independent Ireland. Learn more

Student Services Office

On March 1, 2024 a communication was sent to all York students regarding Senate Executive Committee which agreed to extend the Winter 2024 drop deadline to the last day of classes, April 8, 2024.  It is important to note this drop date is only available for the Bachelor of Arts, Educational Studies students.  Teacher Candidates (BEd) cannot drop courses with the exception of the education electives (ED/EDUC). Please reach out to your Faculty of Education Academic Advisor if needing information on the BEd program requirements.  The BEd is accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers as a full-time, four semester program

Research Office

Professor Chloe Brushwood-Rose’s project “On our own terms: An oral history and archive of queer femme community and culture in Toronto, 1990-2000” was one of two dozen projects led by York University researchers to receive funding from the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council’s Insight Development Grants, announced March 13 by the federal government. Applications to the Program – Applications to the program closed on March 21. All applications are currently being reviewed by the DHH team. From this pool, applicants are selected and invited to an interview. Final admission decisions are made following the interview process. Application information can be found here

Cochlear Implant Workshop – On March 6, the program offered a Cochlear Implant workshop presented by a cochlear implant audiologist from the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. Students learned about the latest in candidacy, surgery, speech processor technology and outcomes for children

OCT Reaccreditation – The DHH Program is up for reaccreditation, which is due December 1, 2024. Work is underway to complete the required documentation for this reaccreditation
