This month’s ‘Get to know our faculty’ profile features assistant professor Natalia Balyasnikova whose research focuses on a critical analysis of the learning experiences of older adults, particularly a significant demographic in Canada—the older multilingual immigrants. Learn more

Baobab Decolonial Collective reading group – Join assistant professor Molade Osibodu and other graduate peers in reading “Decolonizing Diasporas: Radical Mappings of Afro-Atlantic Literature” (which is available for free through the library), taking place on Thursdays from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. (Oct. 5 & 19 | Nov. 2, 16 and 30). Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute: Leading the way in Mental Health Week – Mental Health Week at Marc Garneau Institute was co-developed by alumnus Joseph Smith (BEd ’12, MEd ’14) in response to the social and emotional impacts of the pandemic on students. Read more

Hope you can join us at the Ontario Universities’ Fair (OUF) and represent the Faculty of Education

OUF will is being held Saturday, October 21st and Sunday, October 22nd , 2023 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre – South Building.  Those who have attended and volunteered in the past,  it’s a similar set up. The fair is an opportunity to meet and chat with our future students and their families about both the Bachelor of Education and BA Educational Studies program.  We are hoping you can join us for a few hours or half day.

Congratulations to the following students on the successful completion of their PhD dissertations:

  • Nancy Bell – “Privilege and Vulnerability: Early Study Abroad Experiences and Policy Enactment in a Superdiverse Secondary School”
  • Tiffany Barnikis – “Journey With Me. Wanderings and Wonderings Through Childhoods”
  • Nada Aoudeh – “Qissati: Counterstories of Muslim Women School Administrators in Ontario”
  • Darren Cummings – “Writing ‘Home’ in Rural Queer Teacher Narratives: A Collaborative Autoethnography”

Congratulations to PhD student Marissa Magneson on winning the prestigious and highly competitive SSHRC Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. Her dissertation project, “Beadwork as Pedagogy,” was ranked second out of 200 applications in the national competition and is supervised by Professor Susan Dion. Read more

Upcoming Funding Application Deadlines:

  • Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)/Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) – October 10, 2023

    The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers workshops to support student grant writing towards these awards. While the PhD workshops happened earlier this month, MEd students can still sign up for workshops in October by registering here

The York Graduate Students in Education (YGSE) Fall Social will take place on Friday, September 29th, 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Grad Lounge (113 Winters College)

Classes began on August 21st with an Orientation week for all first-year students (both full and part-time). A major focus of this week was to orient students to the online learning environment and become comfortable using various applications such as eClass, Panopto, Kritik, OneDrive, Padlet and Zoom.


The total enrolment for the 2023-2024 academic year is 56 students which includes 9 Full-Time and 47 Part-Time students from all regions of Ontario and several provinces in Canada. The program is offered online – synchronously for Full-Time students and asynchronously for Part-Time students.

York community events to recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, on Sept. 30, honours the children who never returned home, survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. York University will recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by offering events and resources throughout the month for its community members to learn about the history of residential schools in Canada and the lasting impacts on Indigenous community members today. Learn more
