Getting Around

Please note that Monday 14 October 2024 is a national holiday in Canada and some restaurants and shops will be closed. Hotels and public transit will be open. What to expect on this holiday.

Toronto is not just Canada’s most populated city, it’s a large one with two airports and a national rail station. This webpage will help you travel to navigate around the city.

Getting Around Toronto

Public Transit

Toronto has a transit system of subway, buses, and streetcars called the TTC that stretches across the main part of the city. The TTC will be the cheaper and, depending on the city traffic and where you are going, the quickest way around the city. You can tap your contactless card payment to enter the system.

There are alternate public transit options for those travelling outside the downtown core. York University has put together a comprehensive transportation guide which can be found here.

There are several TTC stops on campus, depending on if you are arriving by subway or bus. The on-campus subway stop, called “York University”, is on the Yonge-University line. It is an accessible station with both elevators and escalators. The accessibility entrance is located at the York Boulevard Entrance, North Common. More information about this station can be found here.

There are many accessible subway stations in Toronto, but if you require elevators or escalators in your travel, it is important to check before you begin your journey.

A full TTC subway and streetcar map can be found here.

Private Transfer

There are several private transfer options in Toronto that can be booked ahead of time:

Please note it may be difficult to hail a taxi off the street near the University, but it is substantially easier to do this in the downtown core.

Travelling to York

From Toronto Pearson International Airport

Once you arrive at Pearson follow the airport signage to “Trains”. The Union Pearson Express operates between Pearson to Union station in just 25 minutes and depart every 15 minutes, seven days a week. A one-way ticket on the service is $12.35 CAD. Once in Union station follow the station signage to the Union TTC stop attached to the main part of the station. Once at Union, board the Yonge-University line Northbound to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station. Get off at York University Station.

From Billy Bishop Airport

Billy Bishop Airport is located south of the downtown core and attached to the Toronto Islands. After arriving at the airport, you can cross to the mainland by a free city-operated ferry (departs approximately every 15 minutes from either port) or a short walkable tunnel running underneath the channel. Once you hit the mainland there is a free shuttle from the airport to Union Station. Once at Union, board the Yonge-University line Northbound to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station. Get off at York University Station.

From Union Station (VIA Train or Go Train)

Once you exit your train follow the station signage to the Union TTC stop attached to the main part of the station. Once at Union, board the Yonge-University line Northbound to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station. Get off at York University Station.
