Dr. Clark Dickerson, University of Waterloo
Presentation Title: Sensational Shoulders: Considering Cars, Chests, Chimpanzees, Compartments and Colleagues
Dr. Clark R. Dickerson is a Professor of Kinesiology and Health Sciences and The Canada Research Chair of Shoulder Mechanics at the University of Waterloo, his workplace since 2005. He is also the current Executive Director of the interdisciplinary University Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology. The work conducted as the principal investigator of DIESEL (Digital Industrial Ergonomics and Shoulder Evaluation Laboratory) focuses on musculoskeletal biomechanics, particularly of the shoulder and upper limbs. He earned his BS in mechanical engineering at Alfred University (NY), his MS in bioengineering from Clemson University (SC), and his PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Michigan (MI). His current research interests include the development and experimental evaluation of deterministic and probabilistic mathematical shoulder models, comparative, clinical, occupational, and functional shoulder biomechanics, and age-, exposure-, and disease-related shoulder disorder prevention, assessment, mitigation and rehabilitation. Dr. Dickerson is an author on > 150 peer-reviewed research articles and > 300 conference and invited talks, and supervisor of > 40 postgraduate and > 110 undergraduate research trainees. He is a past-president of Canadian Society for Biomechanics and current chairperson of the Board of the International Shoulder Group.
Dr. Julie Côté, McGill University
Presentation Title: Personalized analyses of repetitive bilateral shoulder tasks: from the lab to the pool
Dr. Julie Côté, Ph.D. is a Full Professor of Biomechanics in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education of McGill University. Dr. Côté completed a B.Sc. in Kinesiology / Biomechanics (1991 – 1995), and a M.Sc. in Biomechanics (1995 – 1997 (under the supervision of Dr. Kreg Gruben, both at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, while becoming an NCAA champion (4 x 800m relay), an All-America (1500m), and an Athletic – Academic All Big Ten, and representing Canada on the international stage (World University Games). Dr. Côté completed Ph.D. and post-doctoral training at the Université de Montréal, and accepted a tenure-track position at McGill University in the Department that houses the oldest physical education program in North America. She became only the second woman in Departmental history to become Departmental Chair (2016 – 2022) and Full Professor.
Professor Côté’s research program focuses on sex- and gender-specific effects of fatigue on biomechanics and control of repetitive tasks, in both the workplace and the exercise and sports settings. She was part of the inaugural cohort of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR)’s Gender, Work and Health research Chairs program (2013 – 2018). Her work advancing the understanding, measurement, hardware and software development, and knowledge transfer on how we repetitively move, has led to numerous awards, international keynote presentations, publications, supervision and graduation of over 100 research trainees from her lab at all levels from undergraduate to post-doctoral.
In September 2023, Dr. Côté was appointed as the inaugural Director of the Sylvan Adams Sports Science Institute of McGill University, upon receipt of a record-breaking philanthropic gift that she helped secure for McGill University.
