THE PERFORMANCE

This video shows clips from the Pontian,
Island and Thracian performances.

Since Paradosi HDC has been functioning for just over one year, it has only had one performance thus far. The performance was its First Annual Fundraising Galla, which would help pay for the stunning costumes the group needed to purchase in order to perform that night. The concept of raising money for costumes is a familiar one for all Greek dance groups since costumes from Greece range from $1000.00 to $2000.00 each! Now that Paradosi has their first set of costumes, more productions are in the works in hopes to raise more money for more costumes and to travel around North America and even Greece.

Paradosi's first fundraising event was a successful one. Over 400 people were present including heads of many of the major Greek organizations in Toronto and even from Greece. The beginning of the night included a walking choir of dancers singing pre-dinner as well as the changing of the guards and much mingling. Dinner and dessert was served between performances, followed by awards being given, heartfelt speeches from the four instructors and organizers of the group and a lucky draw at the end with many great prizes. The end of the night brought the dancers and the audience together through live greek music from the band and everyone danced the night away.

Now that the group has had their first performance, more people have become interested in following their path to success and would like to see more of what they have to offer. The group is already planning their next big event to be held at the Danforth Theatre at the beginning of June and will be themed on a Grandmother's memory of the homeland and the stories she is telling to her Grandson. These memories will be based on dance, music and Greek experiences in the village she is from in order to give her Grandson an idea of what life was like at that time in Greece. It is important to note here how important memory, identity and territory has become when looking at cultural and traditional dances such as Greek dance.
