Certificates allow you to complete a specific group of university courses (for credit) as either part of your degree studies or separately.
Whether you plan to travel overseas after graduation to teach English or want to add more depth to your English studies, completing the Certificate in the Discipline of Teaching English as an International Language adds flexibility to your career choices. Glendon’s intimate bilingual campus — nestled within multicultural, multilingual Toronto — is the ideal setting for learning to teach English to adults internationally. In small classes, you’ll get lots of one-on-one attention from professors who are experts in their fields. Hands-on learning is a big part of teaching education: Along with practical opportunities within every course, you’ll complete a three-week teaching practicum in an international setting as part of our exchange program with universities in Brazil, Cuba and Colombia.
Certificate Requirements
This certificate consists of 24 credits as follows:
GL/EN 1903 3.0 English in the World; the World in English
GL/EN 3595 6.0 The Nuts & Bolts of English: Grammar for Teaching & Learning
GL/EN 3606 3.0 Learning English as a Second Language
GL/EN 4596 9.0 Teaching English as an International Language
GL/EN 4695 3.0 English as a World Language
Note 1
A minimum grade of B is required in each of the above courses. Not every course is offered every year. Please refer to the English Department website for current course offerings.
Note 2
The course GL/EN 4596 9.0 is only open to students enrolled in the D-TEIL Certificate, and only to those who have achieved a grade of at least B in each of the Certificate courses.
Note 3
Students who are currently enrolled in the Certificate will follow the curriculum which was in place at the time of their application. However, starting in 2019-20, the course GL/EN 4596 is being offered as a 9-credit course and students will need to adjust to that new weighting. The change in weighting of the course will only affect students beginning their studies in the certificate (with GL/EN 1903) in September 2019.
