Our Story
Hi, Nancy here! I’m a 2nd year student at Glendon with a French studies major, visual arts minor, and I’m a part of the concurrent education program to become a teacher.
As someone who finds video games appealing (and distracting at times), I wanted to use gamification as a tool to make French learning more fun and enjoyable. This idea started in high school, when I noticed that I felt a little sad hearing other students complaining about how learning French was not fun. Fast forward to my French course in university, I was surprised to find out that a lot of my classmates were struggling.
Clearly, something was not right here, and when I dug a little deeper, it seemed that sometimes French study was just not appealing enough to effectively maintain a routine (without the pressure of assessments – which can lead to cramming and then forgetting).
So I asked myself… Couldn’t we have a French learning game with fun characters and pleasant visuals to help these young adults who already have the basics down and want to have fun while practising their French ? Sure, gamified French learning exists online, but these games are often at too low of a French level, are too childish, or aren’t engaging enough. We needed something new, and so, Lingoplay was born.
