There are two types of plans that make up your total health coverage: Basic plan and extended (sometimes known as supplementary) plan. Your basic plan, as an international student, is through UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan) and your extended health plan is administered by your student union, the York Federation of Students (YFS).

University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)
UHIP is a mandatory health plan that provides all eligible international and exchange students with affordable health insurance. All students are enrolled automatically and the UHIP fee is charged to your student account. You will not be able to opt out of this insurance, even if you have purchased international medical insurance in your home country.
Your coverage will begin on September 1. If your arrival is earlier, your coverage will automatically begin on August 10. However, please note that this coverage will not be as comprehensive until September 1.
