The application process for research funding begins with a funding opportunity. The Glendon Research Office assists researchers in locating funding opportunities by:

  • Distributing upcoming funding opportunities on the research listserv and posting them on the website, for external funding opportunities. Send an email to subscribe to the research listserv.
  • Promoting information sessions on funding programs and opportunities.
  • providing assistance in the development of external and internal grant applications.

DESCRIPTION:  Glendon College has established the Indigenous and Racialized Scholar Research Grant to recognize the historic and contemporary effects of racism and racial disparities on the career and research paths of Indigenous and racialized colleagues.

The Indigenous and Racialized Scholar Research Grant was established to support innovative research projects from qualified eligible applicants: Indigenous and racialized researchers at Glendon regardless of research area who self-identify as an Indigenous person (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) or as a member of a visible minority (racialized) group. (see below, under Eligibility). 

SUBJECT MATTER:The Indigenous and Racialized Scholar Research Grant is intended to support an original research project from emerging and established Indigenous and racialized scholars at Glendon. Projects may be stand-alone or part of a broader research program. Colleagues who currently do not have external funds will be given priority. Outcomes may include, but are not limited to, publications, presentations, enhanced curriculum, new or expanded partnerships, and reports.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must self-identify as Indigenous or racialized persons in order to be considered eligible for Indigenous and Racialized Scholar Research Grant funding. Applicants who wish to update their self-identification information may do so by completing the employment equity self-identification survey found at https://hr1.apps01.yorku.ca/machform/view.php?id=1 (Login to York Passport required).

Applicants must have an eligible affiliation with Glendon, York University. The guidelines for eligible affiliation are:

  • Tenure-stream YUFA faculty members at Glendon may apply for an Indigenous and Racialized Scholar Research Grant, provided that the project for which they are seeking funding is not already funded by an active external or internal grant.  Start-up funds are not considered an internal grant for the purposes of this adjudication.
  • Applications from colleagues with Contractually Limited Appointments (CLAs) and Special Renewable Contracts (SRCs) will also be considered. Appointments for the grant period must have been confirmed by the application deadline.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:  Friday, March 31 at 4:00 PM.

VALUE AND DURATION: Applicants may request a maximum amount of $3,500 from Indigenous and Racialized Scholar Research funds.  

GUIDELINES: Indigenous and Racialized Scholar Research funds are awarded for a maximum of 12 months, with unused funds returned to the Principal’s Office. If necessary, grant recipients may submit an extension request of 6 months to the Associate Principal, Research & Graduate Studies (APRGS). Indigenous and Racialized Scholar Research funds cannot be used to buy-out teaching or otherwise cover applicants’ salary. Only direct project costs (e.g. hiring student Research Assistants) are eligible for funding. Unless otherwise approved by the APRGS, applicants may not use Indigenous and Racialized Scholar Research Grant Program funds to hire consultant firms where there is, or may be perceived to be, a conflict of interest as defined by the University. Please refer to the York University Conflict of Interest Policies for Faculty Members and Librarians and employees, as appropriate.

Evaluation

The following criteria will inform the review committee’s decision:

  • Clarity of articulation of the research problem and project goals.
  • Justification and appropriateness of the budget
  • The candidate’s career path (junior colleagues will receive priority over more senior colleagues).

Adjudication Process: An interdisciplinary group of Glendon researchers will evaluate applications. Adjudicators will have training in the principles of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

The Community Engagement Research Grant, administered through Glendon’s Research Office, aims to provide seed-funding opportunities to encourage faculty members’ research connections with the non-university community at local, national or international levels.  It recognizes the importance of establishing links with non-university partners for significant types of research.

The Community Engagement Research Grant supports partnerships that align with the goals of York University Engagement strategy and its contribution to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. The review process will prioritize proposals involving collaborative projects with partners working towards mutual benefits. Early-career colleagues will receive priority in the decision-making process.  For the purposes of this grant, community partners include community-based organization, agencies and groups. This may include NGOs, non-university charitable organizations, etc.  These funds are intended to mobilize academic support in support of the work of community-based organizations, agencies and groups.   

“Community-based organizations, agencies or groups” refers to organizations aimed at making improvements to a community’s social health, well-being, and overall functioning. Community organization occurs in geographically, psychosocially, culturally, spiritually, and digitally bounded communities.

Community organization, agencies or groups include community work, community projects, community development, community empowerment, community building, and community mobilization. It is a commonly used model for organizing community within community projects, neighborhoods, organizations, voluntary associations, localities, and social networks, which may operate as ways to mobilize around geography, shared space, shared experience, interest, need, and/or concern.

Applications must be developed as a community partnership and must include:

  • At least one community partner at the local, national or international level
  • A faculty member affiliated to Glendon.
    • Permanent tenure-stream YUFA faculty members at Glendon may apply for a Community Engagement Research Grant, provided that the project for which they are seeking funding is not already funded by an active external or internal grant.
    • Applications from colleagues holding Contractually Limited Appointments (CLAs) and Special Renewal Contracts (SRCs) will also be considered. Appointments for the entirety of the grant period must be confirmed by the application deadline.
    • Colleagues are not permitted to be applicants or co-applicants on more than one Community Engagement Research Grant application in the same competition.

This fund is in support of:

  • A community partnership between Glendon faculty and eligible non-university organizations

Priority will be given to partnerships in the early stages of development (i.e., start-up projects and new projects).

GUIDELINES AND CRITERIA / DIRECTIVES ET CRITÈRES

1. Eligibility:

  • YUFA faculty members (tenured/probationary appointments) affiliated with Glendon College
    may apply to the Glendon Research Grant program if the project for which they are seeking
    funding is not already funded by an external grant. Postdoctoral Visitors (PDVs) who are YUFA
    members will also be eligible for the GRG, but not the Junior Faculty Fund.
  • CLAs and SRCs at Glendon will also be eligible to apply for the GRG. (Appointments for the grant
    period must have been confirmed by the application deadline).
  •  Retired YUFA faculty members from Glendon who are eligible to teach will also be considered
    but given lower priority.
  • Visiting professors affiliated with YUFA are not eligible for funding through this program.
  • CUPE Unit II and CUPE Exempt Contract faculty members are not eligible for funding through
    this program.
  • Members of the committee/sub-committee that adjudicates this award who apply for funding,
    must recuse themselves from discussion and voting on the award.
  •  Tenure-track but not yet tenured YUFA members may also apply for the Junior Faculty Fund in
    January/February.

2. Priority
Grants should be used for the following purposes:

  • seed money for the initiation of a research program for which outside grant applications will be
    submitted.
  •  supplementary funding to cover limited additional costs of a project in progress and already
    supported by outside funds.
  •  limited bridging support of research projects.
  • Applications for projects that have previously received funding through this program will be
    given lower priority and must demonstrate advancement in the project.
  • The quality and impact of the proposed project will be considered in the selection process and in
    the quantity of funding that is allocated.

3. The maximum amount that any recipient can receive over a three-year period is $4,000 from the
Glendon Research Grant fund. Eligible faculty members may also apply for a maximum of $4000
from the Junior Faculty Fund. This maximum can be requested in one application once every three
years or in multiple applications in the three-year period.

4. The Committee does not accept retroactive or prospective applications. There will be only 2
competitions and 2 deadline dates: end of September (GRG only) and beginning of January (GRG
and JFF). Junior faculty members may apply to both the GRG and JFF simultaneously.

5. Ineligible Expenses

  •  participation in conferences or workshops
  •  course preparations
  • administrative projects
  • typing and word-processing
  • salary of the applicant
  • purchase of books and magazines
  • office supplies

6. Eligible Expenses

  • salary of research assistants, consultants, technicians, and participants in experiments, in
    accordance with University Policy
  • software and computer peripherals as per University Policy on Procurement of Goods
  • meals and accommodation for Research.
  • the most economical fares for transportation (mileage allowance for applicant’s own car at the
    applicable rate).
  •  Transcription, translation and interpretation fees
  • Language training directly connected to a research project
  • photocopying
  • Expenses related to preparing and publishing a manuscript (both journal and book manuscripts)
    through the press that are the financial responsibility of the research. Possible expenses include:
    permissions fees, reproduction costs for images, textual translation, editorial assistance,
    indexing. Supporting documentation is required (e.g. advance contract).
  •  Subvention fees from scholarly publishers or page charges associated with scholarly journals.
    Maximum for subventions/page charges is $2000. Supporting documentation is required in the
    form of a letter from the publisher that states that the manuscript has been accepted, and
    identifies the amount needed and offers an explanation for why the subventions/page charges
    are a concern for the publisher.
  • Other justifiable research expenses

7. Applications must be presented on the official forms. Only completed applications duly signed, and
accompanied by the required piece of the documentation (updated CV, other) will be accepted. The
competition deadline must be respected.

8. Incomplete submissions will not be considered.

9. A simple report summarizing the activities undertaken with the funds, any outputs resulting from
the funds and the current status of the project must be sent to the Council Office following the
awarding of the grant. A copy of the report must accompany any subsequent request for Glendon
Research Grant funds.

Deadlines: October 1 and March 1 (Oct 1st deadline is for research grants only; Mar 1st deadline is for both research grants and release time).

Value: Up to $8,000 for research grants; salary equivalent to one full-course directorship for release time course directorship grants

Contract Faculty Research Grants Fund – More Information

Value: Up to $7,000

To provide support to full-time faculty, professional librarians and current Postdoctoral Fellows for stand-alone, small-scale projects and for projects that will lead to the development of larger SSHRC applications or other external funding.

The York Indigenous Incentive Grant provides support for the development of research grant applications, related to Indigenous priorities and needs, to external sources as articulated in our Strategic Research Plan (SRP). Its main purpose will be to defray costs associated with applications for standard programs of research (including but not limited to NSERC Discovery, CIHR, SSHRC Connection Grants, SSHRC Insight and Insight Development Grants, and SSHRC Partnership Development Grants). While the scale of initiatives supported may vary according to discipline, all proposals must clearly demonstrate the intended external source of support.

Glendon YUFA Conference Travel Funds Guidelines

Glendon’s Conference Travel program is the adjudicated process through which the Faculty disburses the YUFA faculty conference Travel funds (see section 19.29 (c) of the YUFA collective agreement.

Eligibility

  • Full-time (tenured/probation appointments) YUFA faculty members affiliated with Glendon may apply to the Conference Travel Fund
  • Senior Scholars are eligible to apply for conference travel funds on the same basis as full-time faculty
  • CLAs and SRCs will also be considered
  • Expenses associated with attending other kinds of scholarly or professional meetings/workshop are eligible.
  • CUPE unit II and CUPE Exempt Contract faculty members are not eligible for funding though this program.
  • Applicants should be presenting research at the conference or meeting. Expenses associated with simply attending a conference or chairing a session are not eligible.
  • The conference or meeting should relate to their field of research

Submit the completed conference travel application form and supporting documents to Research@glendon.yorku.ca at least three (3) weeks prior to the event date obtain the Associate Principal, Research and Graduate Studies approval.

Value: Generally, up to a minimum APEX or Charter Class airfare.

To provide assistance for attendance at national and international scholarly conferences for which the applicant is giving a paper, making a poster presentation, or featured at a solo or 2 person opening of an exhibition, a principal screening, premier performance of dance, theatre or musical production.

Value: Up to $2,000

To support contract faculty members who are giving papers; have been asked to give commentaries or to chair sessions; or are attending conferences.
