Academic Planning & Policy Committee

Marwah Azizi, Disaster & Emergency Management
My intercultural experiences as an immigrant have shaped me into the critical thinker and devoted advocate for health equity that I am today. From firsthand experiences with health disparities in Afghanistan and Canada to working in various world-renowned hospitals and serving vulnerable populations through local nonprofit organizations, one goal has become abundantly clear to me; to make an impact in the lives of marginalized communities in Canada and beyond. It is both my story and my calling.  I pursued my undergraduate studies in Public Health at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) to acquire the necessary practical and theoretical knowledge and skills to transform my lived experiences and challenges as an immigrant and ethnic minority, into policymaking and a catalyst for addressing health equity issues at both local and global levels. Through my involvement in the Academic Planning & Policy Committee, I aim to advocate for inclusive policies that prioritize the needs of diverse communities. Moreover, by leveraging my intercultural background and educational foundation in Public Health, I aspire to influence decision-making processes that promote equitable resource allocation, culturally competent care, and community engagement initiatives.

Mohammad Noman Baber, Political Science
As someone deeply committed to academic excellence and policy development, I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to serve as a member of the Academic Planning and Policy Committee at the Faculty Council. My robust background in academic planning, policymaking, and project management, alongside fluency in five languages, uniquely qualifies me for this role. My academic journey and professional experiences have equipped me with the essential skills to effectively contribute to faculty council initiatives. During my internship at The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Warsaw, I coordinated multicultural events shedding light on the plight of displaced individuals and assisted the counselor’s office in formulating and implementing development plans and diplomatic relations with other embassies and the international community. Moreover, my diverse educational background spanning universities in Europe, the US, and Canada has honed my proficiency in advising others on navigating successful academic paths. As a Security and Defense Studies Researcher at the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies, I have spearheaded extensive research, provided strategic analysis, and significantly contributed to policy development. My published op-eds on security matters underscore my expertise in synthesizing findings for policy development and engaging in scholarly discourse.  Additionally, being selected as a fellow researcher for the Dean Awards for Research Excellence at York University’s LA&PS faculty underscores my commitment to scholarly excellence and research innovation. In essence, my multifaceted experiences, language proficiency, and substantive contributions to policy research position me as an exemplary candidate for this pivotal position within the committee.

Susan Margaret Cawley, Humanities
Having experience as a course director as well as a teaching assistant across three universities, I feel I could make use of that experience to look forward as York University seeks to plan for the future. Both York and Toronto are diverse, multicultural, multiethnic societies, which need to take into account these factors, as well as the requirements of the future workforce for graduating students. What will best prepare the university student of the late 2020s for the world outside of academia? What will provide them with value for their investment, both financial and time-wise, in York University? Academic planning needs to be honest and pragmatic, not fashionable. That is what will best serve those who choose to enrol, and for both those students, and the academic planners: Tentanda Via – The Way Must Be Tried.

The tools she learnt throughout the certificate will enable her to have creative and informed decision-making skills. I participated in elocution, mimicry, Model United Nations and independent thinking competitions to enhance my professional public speaking skills. In the Mettle fest which is a business fest held every year at my undergraduate college, I handled the corporate social responsibility of the team.

Post my undergraduate degree, I began working at a financial advisory firm where I participated in a number of team activities where I assisted with the implementation of a negotiation within three countries (US, UAE, India) according to three different time zones and aided a mental health chain with regards to financial governance and helped them to implement the same on ground.

I have also pursued graduate level certificate in business administration course from York University where I scored at least a grade of B in every single course and completed a Masters of Commerce degree where I bagged first division in each of the two years.

I believe serving in the awards committee will allow me to upskill and implement my precise decision-making skills. Being a recipient of the Dean’s Entrance Award myself, I will be able to select and successfully determine deserving recipients of various awards, scholarships and prizes with thorough judgement. Since I possess an in-depth knowledge and comprehension of attaining scholarships and awards at Schulich, I will be in a better position to suggest, advance and recommend certain terms and conditions of new scholarships for FGS.

Petitions Committee

Shahen Alexanian, Mathematics & Statistics
I have served on various committees as an undergrad, and am happy to continue to serve should I be needed.  I am currently serving on the Faculty Council for Lassonde as well as the Tenure and Appointments Committee, also at Lassonde.  I have also served two years on the Lassonde Computer Science Curriculum Committee.  Again, if my experience and time are of assistance to York, I would be happy to continue to serve.

Samantha Burelle, Kinesiology & Health Science
My name is Samantha Burelle – a 2nd year PhD Candidate in Kinesiology and Health Science. My current research looked to explore the interplay between risk and safety in sport by taking a systems approach (policy to person). I am also currently working with a National Sport Organization in a Safe Sport and Communication capacity where my responsibilities predominantly consist of program development, policy implementation, education and awareness, and communication to our members.

During my master’s program (2020-2022) I was heavily involved in the Graduate Student Kinesiology Council as an Electoral and Policy Coordinator. In my first year, my co-coordinator and I were tasked with developing the club’s first constitution and electoral procedures for future year. In the subsequent year, I executed the first ever election as sole Electoral and Policy Coordinator. This was a great learning opportunity as I was involved in the development – with the department, the graduate student association, and current club executive – and implementation of the by-laws the following year. Prior to graduate school, I sat as an undergraduate student member (from 2018-2020) on the Acadia University Non-Academic Judicial Board, which was responsible for any non-academic disciplinary matters and appeals.

I would consider myself to act with integrity and transparency while remaining open-minded and compassionate. I have gained skills in communication, leadership and conflict resolution that will be an asset for this role. I would be honoured to hold the graduate student position on the Petitions Committee and will bring forth enthusiasm and sincerity.

I served as the President of the Glendon College Student Union during the 2022/2023 academic year and I served as a student Senator, where I represented students on the Senate Appeals Committee. I also have many years of experience serving on the Faculty Council of Glendon College and on various other committees and working groups, including the Principal’s Search Committee, the Tenure and Promotions Committee and the Curriculum Committee. I look forward to learning more about the needs of graduate students and how I can work to best support graduate students in this leadership role.
