Faculty of Graduate Studies’ Council Postdoctoral Visitors Election 2024

Biographical Statements

Jonathan David, Psychology
My name is Jonathan David and I have been a Postdoctoral Visitor here at York since January 2024. I finished my PhD in Psychology last year at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. I am the first in my family to attend university and am a POC and LGBTQ+. If I was on the FGS Council, I would advocate and work to enhance the Postdoc experience here at York.

Aamir Minhas Khan, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science
I have worked at YorkU for the last 6 years as a postdoc researcher after my Ph.D. Along with my research in this position, I have been trained to deal with different research/professor matters. Moreover, I have experience volunteering in educational matters in some communities. But I always feel I could serve much better if I had more information. Then I came across this opportunity, and it would enhance my experience in serving better.

Hung Nguyen, School of Health Policy & Management
I have been a postdoctoral visitor in the School of Health Policy and Management for 1.5 years. I completed my PhD in Public Health in the University of Waterloo. In addition to expertise in research on older adults, I have many years in leadership positions with non-profits where I led program deliveries, partnerships, and fundraising.

I am responding to the Call for Nominations for Positions on the Faculty of Graduate Studies Council (Postdoctoral Researchers) because
(1) I can provide the Council with insights in graduate and postdoctoral studies, especially from those with non-English speaking backgrounds, to help with the Council’s decision making and advocacy.
(2) I have many years of experience working across sectors in academia and in other sectors (non-profit, private sector, government). Therefore, I can help the Council with supporting disciplinary, multi-disciplinary, and cross-Faculty initiatives.
(3) Developing and maintaining standards in research and professionalization is vital to graduate and postdoctoral development. I can help with governing the above standards by providing my insights and perceptions on graduate admissions and examinations, and postdoc recruitment and career development.
(4) I am seeking pan-university governance experience. The position on the Faculty of Graduate Studies Council well fit my interest.
