Awards and Other Support Funds

Many graduate students at York are successful in winning prestigious external or internal scholarships and you are encouraged to seek eligible opportunities. The university also offers bursaries and other support funds to assist with your scholarly and research activities. Common types of funds include the following: 

External awards such as SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR doctoral and CGS-Masters programs, as well as the Ontario Graduate Scholarship;

Bursaries that are allocated based on demonstrated financial need;

Research support funds to cover expenses related to scholarly and research activities;  

Donor-supported internal awards: To find internal award opportunities, please use the award search.

Graduate Program or Faculty Specific Awards

The Lawrence Heisey Graduate Award in Fine Arts will be awarded to recognize outstanding ability and achievement in scholarly and/or creative work. It will be awarded to students entering their second or higher year of study in any Fine Arts graduate program. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, be Ontario residents*, and demonstrate financial need.

Interested students may contact their respective graduate program in the School of Arts, Media, Performance, and Design (AMPD) for more information.

The Visual Arts of the Americas Graduate Award ($1250): given annually to a second-year student in the Graduate Program in Art History whose research focuses on some aspect of the visual arts of North, Central, or South America. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and academic excellence.

The Cardarelli Family Award in Art History is given annually in recognition of outstanding scholarly work to a student in second year of studies in the Graduate Program in Art History. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, be Ontario residents*, and demonstrate financial need.

Overview

The Dorothy Rowe Visual Cultures & Canada Graduate Award is intended to stimulate and support the study of visual cultures and Canada. It will be offered annually to a student who is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, and an Ontario resident* demonstrating financial need and academic excellence, who is entering the Graduate Program in Art History with the intention of focusing her or his studies on issues related to cultural diversity or intra-cultural understanding of visual cultures within the Canadian context.

The Joyce Zemans Prize (*$250): awarded annually to a full-time graduate student in the Art History Program who demonstrates the highest academic distinction.

Overview

The goal of the Zdenka Volavka Research Fellowship is to stimulate and support the study of the art history of the indigenous peoples of Africa and North America through fieldwork and to provide opportunities for comparative study through field activities and related collections research.

Applications are reviewed and awarded by the Graduate Studies Awards Committee.

Value and Duration

  • Up to 3 awards of $6,000 each (Subject to change)

Eligibility

  • Full–time registered York graduate student;
  • Students must be engaged or propose to engage in field–based art historical research, which may include comparative study through collections as well as field activities, focusing on the art of the indigenous peoples of Africa and/or North America.

  • February 28

How to Apply

Students must complete the Award Submission Portal with the following information:

  • The applicant's statement section should outline how the student's research is aligned with the scope of the award; and
  • Upload required material(s), merged into one PDF file, 1) an up-to-date CV, and 2) a copy of transcript for the most two recent years of study (an unofficial transcript or records from student account are acceptable)

ALLOCATION PROCESS

  • After the Graduate Studies Awards Committee determines the recipient, the Office of the Dean, Graduate Studies will contact all applicants by e–mail and post the allocation to the successful applicant’s student account.
