Overview
The CIHR Doctoral Research Awards consist of two programs administered through a single application:
- The CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral Awards (CGS-D) program provides special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field in Canada.
- Some Canada Graduate Scholarship recipients may be considered for the honour of having their scholarship named a “Canada Graduate Scholarship to Honour Nelson Mandela”, should CIHR deem their application to be aligned with at least one of five themes championed by Mandela: national unity; democracy; freedom and human rights; leadership; children’s participation in society; and children’s health.
- The Doctoral Foreign Study Award (DFSA) provides special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field abroad.
Candidates apply to the CIHR Doctoral Research Awards competition and top-ranked candidates are awarded a CGS-D or DFSA depending on the proposed location where the doctoral degree will be pursued and granted.
All candidates are expected to have an exceptionally high potential for future research achievement and productivity.

In addition, students submitting a CIHR doctoral application through the agency are also required to submit a condensed Tri-council/OGS application on the York University Financial Aid, Awards and Scholarships (FAAS) system. This will enable staff to match tri-council applications submitted by the student in the system by October 2, 2024.
To submit an application, please follow the online application instructions provided by CIHR.
All students MUST submit an application on the CIHR online portal to be considered for the national competiton.
Transcripts
Official transcripts with your complete academic record (undergraduate and graduate studies, completed and ongoing) are required. Accordingly, applicants are responsible for collecting, uploading, and confirming legibility of previous and current (including Fall 2024 even if no grades are available) official transcripts and upload them directly onto the application portal.
To access your York University official transcript, please visit the Order Transcripts Online page and request for your official transcript to be emailed to you. Please note that grade reports will not be accepted.
