York’s graduate programs inspire research and creation in dance grounded in diverse artistic, intellectual, and social contexts. York alumni can be found across Canada and around the world in professions within and beyond dance. They contribute as teachers, choreographers, artistic directors, arts administrators, archivists, librarians, curators, film producers, writers, critics, and editors.
*Due to circumstances beyond the control of the Department, we will be pausing our intake of new graduate students for the Academic Year. This hiatus will allow us to ensure that the strengths of our graduate programs continue and that all our graduate students receive the best experience possible.
Founded in the 1970s, York’s undergraduate and graduate programs were the first in Canada to award dance degrees. Faculty members lead in the field—informed by the past, active in the present, and moving toward the future. They value the cultural backgrounds, professional experience, and age range of York’s graduate students in dance. Students investigate experiences and theories through studio practice, seminars, field trips, research, productions, and academic conferences.
MFA in Dance: Choreography | Collaboration | Creation
The MFA in Dance Program: ‘Choreography | Collaboration | Creation’ reflects the ways many contemporary artists are working today. This student-centred, experiential program encourages students to work collaboratively with other graduate students from a wide range of disciplines and to successfully find their own creative voice. In addition to a foundation focus on choreography, the use of digital technology in support of dance will be encouraged through coursework and access to leading-edge technology.
