Master of Arts (MA), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The Graduate Program in Gender, Feminist and Women’s Studies offers an MA and a PhD to full-time and part-time students. Our Program is fundamentally interdisciplinary in formation and practice. One of our primary goals is to develop and apply a feminist analytical perspective to teaching and research on women and gender as they intersect with sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, ability, and age. A second goal is to provide rigorous interdisciplinary training that provides students with the tools to enact social transformation in theory and praxis and enables students to conduct research and analysis both within and outside academia.

Graduate school can be frustrating and precarious, especially as an international student, which is why the Gender, Feminist & Women’s Studies program at York University has been a uniquely pleasant experience for me. The program offers an interdisciplinary milieu, with an expanding range of coursework that attempts to match student interests. Further, the department pairs incoming graduate students with an advisor — mine helped me plan my PhD timeline and access external funding, which made my experience infinitely smoother. Finally, the department also encourages student participation in its administration, which offers an unparalleled learning experience. Participating in the executive functioning of the program and adjudicating on PhD admissions has been invaluable in shaping my approach to pedagogy and scholarship.
