Welcome to the graduate program in Mathematics and Statistics, at York University. Our department is home to a large number of faculty, engaging with research on a broad range of topics in pure and applied mathematics, as well as statistics and data science. This commitment to active research at the frontiers of our subject translates to a stimulating environment for post-graduate training, providing the challenges you need to develop your expertise in the field. I hope you will join us!
Our one-year Master of Arts program can be tailored to each student’s needs, offering six streams of focus: pure math, applied math, probability, theoretical statistics, applied statistics, and data science, as well as three options for completion: based entirely on courses, or centered on a major research component in the form of a survey paper or thesis. In addition to the valuable domain-specific skills, students will obtain broadly applicable and in-demand transferrable skills, for example, the presentation experience provided by our seminar option. This program can also be supplemented by additional credentials, such as our Diploma in Financial Engineering.
Our two-year Master of Science in Applied and Industrial Mathematics offers the option to develop deeper proficiency in these areas, while our Doctor of Philosophy program allows a student to become a true expert, up to date on cutting-edge research in one of a number of areas in mathematics and statistics.
During your graduate studies at York University, your progress through various courses and program milestones, as well as access to teaching opportunities, awards, and scholarships, will be facilitated by the graduate program director (me!), the graduate program assistant, and various other supporting staff and faculty. As someone who has been through graduate school, I can assure you that peer support and camaraderie are sometimes the most important of all, found at York both in the form of student-organized departmental events, such as our graduate student seminar, as well as more broadly by organizations such as the York University Graduate Student Association.
If you have any questions about our program, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
