Awards and Other Support Funds

Many graduate students at York are successful in winning prestigious external or internal scholarships and you are encouraged to seek eligible opportunities. The university also offers bursaries and other support funds to assist with your scholarly and research activities. Common types of funds include the following: 

Bursaries that are allocated based on demonstrated financial need;

Research support funds to cover expenses related to scholarly and research activities;

Graduate Program or Faculty-Specific Awards

York University’s Graduate Program in Music offers a diverse range of research options that include a variety of genres within such disciplines as composition, ethnomusicology, improvisation, jazz, musicology, popular music, theory, analysis and world music. Common geographic areas of study encompass North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

Overview

The Shanti Chakravorty Award in Indian Classical Music will be presented in recognition of artistic and scholarly achievement in Indian classical music. This award will be granted annually to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing the study of Indian classical music at York University. Preference will be given to a student focusing on vocal Indian classical music performance. Recipients must have a GPA of 7.00 (B+). Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, Ontario residents*, and demonstrate financial need.

This award was established by the family of Shanti Chakravorty to recognize her commitment as a performing artist and teacher of Indian classical music.

Overview

The John Arpin Award shall be awarded annually to first-year graduate student(s) entering a Masters or PhD program in music. Recipients must demonstrate outstanding academic merit and be studying in the area of performance, performance studies and/or composition. If there is no eligible applicant who meets the desired criteria considered for this award it may also be extended to students in other fine arts performance disciplines when students demonstrate exceptional talent and academic merit.

  • The value and number of award(s) in any given year will depend on the rate of distribution from the endowment fund and the number of recipients selected

Eligibility

  • Full–time registered Master’s or doctoral York graduate student;
  • Must be an incoming student;
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents and/or protected persons who are residents of Ontario;
  • Selection criteria include:
    • Music;
    • Research focus in performance, performance studies and/or composition;
    • Outstanding top academic achievement;
    • Financial need.

Note: The student must be registered full-time for the current academic year (Fall/Winter).

The Dr. Paul-Emile Chaput and Therese Thouin Chaput and Genevieve Alexandra Williams Award will be given annually to a graduate student (MA or PhD) enrolled in the Graduate Program in Music within the School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design. The recipient must have maintained a minimum B+ average and have demonstrated leadership. Applicants must submit a one (1) page statement outlining their leadership within the York student life or their local community. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need.

Overview

The Sunnuz Sarah Taheri Graduate Award in Fine Arts is awarded annually to students enrolled full-time in an MA or PhD program within the Department of Music in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design. Recipients must demonstrate financial need, outstanding academic merit, artistic excellence, and a focus in one of the following areas: musical performance, performance studies, or composition. Recipients must also demonstrate their work’s connection to performance/performing arts. Preference will be given to students studying vocal performance.

Passionate about performing and making music since her childhood, Sunnuz Sarah Taheri had diverse tastes in musical styles including classical, jazz, soul, hip hop and more. Sunnuz sacrificed much of her short life so she could play music and sing. She also took an active role on issues relating to the environment, global conflicts, culture and furthering women’s rights. The Sunnuz Sarah Taheri Graduate Award in the Fine Arts was established in Sunnuz’s memory to help music and arts students to realize their full potential; she would wish them happiness and joy in their journey.
