Welcome to the Graduate Program in Social and Political Thought!
We are an interdisciplinary, independent study program that stresses both historical and systematic study of social and political ideas. The Program emphasizes critical thinking and encourages research that is empirical, grounded, textual, as well as purely theoretical, offering Master’s and PhD degrees. Our three streams focus on histories of social and political thought, theories of ‘race,’ racism and coloniality, and the study of culture, consciousness and the economy. The Program is located in the Department of Social Science in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies at the heart of the Keele campus.
We have wide range of faculty members from across the university, with very diverse research and teaching interests. Many are research chairs and leaders in their fields. We hope you look at our faculty members’ specific interests and contact them.
Many of our graduates have successfully found academic jobs in a variety of disciplines – as professors, research fellows, adjuncts, and administrators. Others have gone beyond the academy as teachers, artists, writers, policy analysts, and social and community workers. The Program is also an important incubator for new ideas and academic directions. Our alumni have helped start a number of other new graduate programs at York University, and the Program is currently supporting the establishment of Black Studies at the university. Social and Political Thought provides a broad foundation for many futures!
