Awards and Other Support Funds

Many graduate students at York are successful in winning prestigious external or internal scholarships and you are encouraged to seek eligible opportunities. The university also offers bursaries and other support funds to assist with your scholarly and research activities. Common types of funds include the following: 

Bursaries that are allocated based on demonstrated financial need;

Research support funds to cover expenses related to scholarly and research activities;

Graduate Program or Faculty Specific Awards

Value of Award:
A maximum of five awards, each worth $4,000, will be awarded for 2022-23.

Eligibility:

To be eligible, students must be enrolled full-time in an MFA, MA, or PhD program within the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design, and must demonstrate artistic excellence through a portfolio review. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in research creation. Criteria for excellence include originality, formal inventiveness, social impact and feasibility.  Special consideration will be given to students whose work is of an interdisciplinary, cross-departmental, or cross-faculty nature. Please note that funding is for a student project, not the student. The budget should reflect this (template provided).

Nomination Procedure:

Each program may submit 1 PhD and 1 Masters nomination. The nomination file will consist of:

  1. A letter from the Graduate Program Director supporting the nomination
  2. A description of the proposed project (maximum 500 words)
  3. A budget (template provided)
  4. A current CV
  5. Transcripts (or an explanation of professional equivalent)
  6. A portfolio of the nominee’s creative output. This should be a PDF file (maximum 1 page), containing up to three (3) links to the nominee’s relevant work, with brief descriptions providing context.  Video clips must not exceed 5 minutes each

*If you are interested in this award, please submit your application to the Graduate Program Assistant (gradthea@yorku.ca) by Tuesday, November 1st, 2023. Please note that only one application from the MA/MFA program and one from the Ph.D. program can be put forward by the department.

Overview

The Don Rubin Dissertation Award in Canadian Theatre will be awarded annually to a current PhD student in Theatre, Dance & Performance Studies who is writing a dissertation on a Canadian theatre subject. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons, be Ontario residents*, and demonstrate financial need.
