York’s Psychology program was ranked 4th in Canada (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 and Shanghai Rankings, 2024 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects) and among the Top 75 psychology programs in the world (Shanghai Rankings, 2024 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects).

York’s Kinesiology & Health Science program ranks among the Top 10 Kinesiology programs in Canada (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 by subject: life sciences/sport science).

Professors Shayna Rosenbaum (Psychology), Robert Cribbie (Psychology), and Sean Hillier (Health Policy & Management) were honoured with the Faculty of Health Dean’s Awards for excellence in research, education, and service.

Professors Celina Da Silva (Nurs), Rachel da Silveria Gorman (SHPM), Kerry Kawakami (Psyc), Amy Muise (Psyc), Jennifer Mills (Psyc), and Cathy (Xijuan) Zhang (Psyc) were among 21 York researchers awarded $2.8M+ in SSHRC Insight grants for their research projects.

Professors Michael Kalu (Kine), Roya Haghiri-Vijeh (Nurs), Amy Muise (Psyc) and Heather Prime (Psyc) were among 22 York researchers who were awarded $1.3M+ in SSHRC Insight Development Grants for their research projects.

Faculty of Health researchers Godfred Boateng (Global Health), James Elder (Psychology), Sherry Grace (Kinesiology), David Hood (Kinesiology), Debra Pepler (Psychology), Ali Abdul Sater (Kinesiology), and Lauren Sergio (Kinesiology) were among 65 York researchers recognized for their research accomplishments at the 2024 York University Research Awards.

Dean David Peters was one of 49 new Fellows elected to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in recognition of his significant contributions to health policy and systems reform in low-and middle-income countries.

Professors Kerry Kawakami (Psychology) & Sean Hillier (Health Policy & Management) who have been elected to the Royal Society of Canada, one of the country’s highest honours in the arts, social sciences and sciences.

Psychology Professor Emeritus Stephen Fleming has received the prestigious Herman Feifel Award from the International Work Group on Death, Dying and Bereavement for his work in the field.

York University’s Muscle Health Research Centre was ranked #4 in the world among academic institutions for research impact in skeletal muscle in the ScholarGPS Institutional Rankings. This achievement, based on the centre’s impact over the past five years, places York among the leading institutions in this field of study.

Professors Rebecca Pillai Riddell (Psychology), Mathieu Poirier (Global Health) and Steven Hoffman (Health Policy & Management) were among four York faculty members who received nearly $3 million from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to fund their research on preterm infant care and global health equity, respectively.

Psychology professors Erez Freud and Amy Muise received York Research Chair in Visual Cognitive Neuroscience and Relationships & Sexuality, respectively.

Professors Ali Abdul-Sater (Kinesiology), Chris Perry (Kinesiology), Tara Haas (Kinesiology), Devin Phillips (Kinesiology), Richard Murray (Psychology) and Christopher Perry (Kinesiology who are among 54 #YorkU researchers awarded more than $3.3 million combined from the Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) in support of their research projects.

Kinesiology & Health Science Professor Michael Kalu is co-lead on a community-based research project, funded by a Catalyst Grant of nearly $100,000 from the University of Toronto’s Novo Nordisk Network for Healthy Populations, to develop a culturally-tailored self-management tool for older Black adults living with diabetes in Peel Region.

At the 2024 Canadian Athletic Therapists Association Conference, Kinesiology & Health Science Professor Emeritus Frances Flint received the title of certified athletic therapist emerita for her contributions to the field.

Graduate students Ngozi Iroanyah (PhD candidate, Health Policy and Equity Studies - Supervisor Marina Morrow), Tolu Faromika (MSc candidate, Clinical Psychology – Supervisor Shayna Rosenbaum) and Patrick Hewan (MSc candidate, Clinical Psychology – Supervisors Gary Turner and Nathan Spreng) were recipients of the Brain Canada, the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health, and Heart & Stroke Personnel Awards for Black Scholars, a program designed to increase the number of highly qualified Black trainees in heart and/or brain research across Canada.

Kinesiology & Health Science alumna Katie Vincent won the gold medal in the Women's Canoe Single 200m event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, a first for Canada, and setting a new Olympic record time of 44.12.

Alumna Parker Lee Grant (BSc ’24, Psychology) was awarded the 2024 Governor General’s Silver Medal, which recognizes outstanding achievements of undergraduate students in Canada.

Carly Goodman, a Master’s student in clinical developmental psychology, was awarded the 2024 Governor General’s Gold Medal, which recognize the outstanding scholastic achievements of graduate students in Canada.

Psychology alumna & clinical neuropsychologist Dr. Bri S. Darboh (BA ’15, MA ’18, PhD ’24), was recognized for her work creating positive change in her field of dementia care with a 2024 York University One to Watch Alumni Award.

Five Faculty of Health Alumni: Gurleen Bajwa (BHS ’16), Shayandeep Das (BHS ’21), Dolly Dhaliwal (BSc ’19, Kinesiology), Khalidha Nasiri (BSc ’17, Psychology), and Sara Pishdadian (MA ’18, PhD ’23, Clinical Psychology) were among York’s 2024 Top 30 Alumni Under 30 for their work creating positive change to build a healthy world for all.

Students Nathaniel Goldstein (Psychology) and Abhi Pathak (Kinesiology) were awarded the 2023-24 Faculty of Health Gold Medal for Academic Excellence and Outstanding Leadership. Students Nicole Dimitrova (Psychology) and Chimdinma Ukabiala (Kinesiology & Health Science) were awarded the Silver Medal for Outstanding Leadership. Students Isma Akram (Psychology), Parker Lee Grant (Psychology), and Shyamaly Vasuthevan (Psychology) were awarded the Silver Medal for Academic Merit.

Four Faculty of Health students: Jennifer Bromberg (Psychology), April Cole (Kinesiology), Nicole Dimitrova (Psychology), and Meaghan Landry (Psychology) were among those honoured with the 2024 Robert J. Tiffin Student Leadership Award recognizing their outstanding leadership that contributed to the growth, development and vitality of the University.

Nursing Assistant Professor Dr. Archana Paul was the winner of the 2024 Council of Ontario University Programs in Nursing (COUPN) Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Nursing student David Adedeji won the 2024 Council of Ontario University Programs in Nursing (COUPN) Award for Excellence in Professional Nursing Practice at the Undergrad Level.

Nursing Professor Nazilla Khanlou’s article in the impactful journal Nursing Open on advancing knowledge of nursing care for persons with developmental disabilities was among the top 10 percent most downloaded papers in its first 12 months of publication.

Faculty of Health researchers Taylor Cleworth (Kinesiology), Steven Hoffman (Health Policy & Management), Jaclyn Hurley (Kinesiology), Andrea Josse (Kinesiology), Matthew Keough (Psychology), Shayna Rosenbaum (Psychology), and Ali Abdul Sater (Kinesiology) were among the York recipients of more than $3M in funding from the Ontario Research Fund for innovative research projects designed to bring new products, ideas and technologies to market.
