Experiential Education Course Coding Pilot in the School of Kinesiology and Health Science

Experiential Education is an approach to learning that bridges theory and practice. Numerous courses in the Faculty of Health incorporate experiential education through a variety of strategies: from guest speakers, and field trips to community based research, and placements.  The School of Kinesiology and Health Science is participating in a pilot to determine a method for identifying and coding courses that include experiential education.

About the Pilot

  • Determine a pan-university method that best identifies the type of experiential education (EE) available in courses, using York’s Common Language for EE.
  • Support efforts to develop codes for identifying EE courses, similar to the way that the letter ‘P’ indicates a practicum course.
  • Inform understanding of the variety of EE opportunities in the School of Kinesiology and Health Science. Some information may be reviewed alongside course syllabi to gain further insight into EE how EE is communicated and implemented.
  • Please note that this survey is in no way an effort to evaluate or assess individual course directors' engagement with EE.
  • There are a variety of EE opportunities embedded in Faculty of Health courses, but there is no systematic way to identify these courses.
  • Developing EE course codes has the potential to: help students to identify an EE course before enrolling, and plan accordingly; and facilitate the support and promotion of EE courses.
  • Registrar’s Office
  • Office of the Associate Vice-President Teaching and Learning
  • YU Experience Hub
  • Faculty of Health Dean’s Office (with support from the EE Coordinator)
  • A similar pilot was conducted in the School of Social Work in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies
