The following is a list of available scholarships, awards, and prizes offered by the School of Global Health, Faculty of Health, and York University, including their descriptions, criteria, value, and stage of awarding.

Some scholarships, awards, and prizes require an application, while others will be awarded automatically without application based on data the University already collects. Please check all requirements, eligibility, and deadlines.

Dedicated to promoting excellence in the undergraduate Global Health program at York University. The scholarship aims to assist qualified domestic and international students to pursue their studies in the first year of the program. The scholarship value is $2,000 and will be awarded to top students on the basis of academic merit. [No Application Required]

Global Health Prizes are awarded to undergraduate students enrolled in the Global Health program who demonstrate academic and/or service excellence.

Harvey Skinner Excellence in Global Health Prize

Awarded to the full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the Specialized Honours or Honours Global Health program who received the highest grade in the first year of their program. The prize is named after Dr. Harvey Skinner, the inaugural Dean of the Faculty of Health and the Dean who oversaw the creation of the Global Health program. No application required.

Paul McDonald Excellence in Global Health Prize

Awarded to the full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the Specialized Honours or Honours Global Health program who received the highest grade in the second year of their program. The prize is named after Dr. Paul McDonald, the Dean of the Faculty of Health who oversaw the creation of the School of Global Health. No application required.

Lesley Beagrie Excellence in Global Health Prize

Awarded to the full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the Specialized Honours or Honours Global Health program who received the highest grade in the third year of their program. The prize is named after Dr. Lesley Beagrie, Director of the School of Nursing and Associate Dean of Professional and Global Programs, who was the initiator of the Global Health program. No application required.

Beryl Pilkington Excellence in Global Health Prize

Awarded to the full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the Specialized Honours or Honours Global Health program who received the highest grade in the fourth year of their program. The award is named after Dr. Beryl Pilkington, a professor and the first Program Coordinator of the Global Health program. No application required.

Firdosi Mehta Service in Global Health Prize

Awarded to an undergraduate student enrolled in the Specialized Honours or Honours Global Health program in any year who has demonstrated excellent and impactful service within York University more widely and/or the broader community in being an agent of change related to global health. The prize is named after Dr. Firdosi Mehta who had a distinguished career with the World Health Organization in Somalia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka as the country representative and contributed measurably to the Global Health Program through guest lectures and mentorship to our students. A.M. Viens Leadership in Global Health Prize

Awarded to an undergraduate student enrolled in the Specialized Honours or Honours Global Health program in any year who has demonstrated excellent and impactful leadership within the School of Global Health and/or Faculty of Health in demonstrating advocacy and support for global health initiatives and/or global health students. The prize is named after Dr. A.M. Viens who was the Inaugural Director of the School of Global Health. Application required.

Awarded to support the international mobility of undergraduate students engaged in global health initiatives. The award will support qualified Global Health students to travel abroad to participate in international activities in the field of global health by helping to cover travel and accommodation expenses. The award will be granted to undergraduate students who want to complete a global health project as part as a one-term (11 weeks) international placement to meet the requirement of their academic program. Priority will be given applicants with demonstrated financial need who are wanting to travel to placements in organizations with which the Faculty of Health has a Memorandum of Understanding and/or a Practicum Agreement by the application deadline. Undergraduate student applicants are required: 

  • to be in good academic standing;
  • to provide a budget that details estimated expenses related to travel and accommodation and other awards and scholarships applied for; 
  • to provide a receipt for costs related to travel expenses along with the budget form. Upon return, all award recipients are expected to share their experiences with their peers in the Global Health research capstone course, and to provide receipts of expenses related to accommodation. Failure to provide receipts will result in a reassessment of the funding awarded.

20 scholarships to be awarded, valued at $45,000, which is renewable. They are awarded to international high school applicants who are entering their first year of a four-year undergraduate degree program and demonstrate academic excellence, commitment to volunteer work and extracurricular activities, and leadership skills. The President’s International Scholarship of Excellence awards are high-value awards that cannot be combined with entrance scholarships. Students may apply to York’s prestigious scholarships – if successful, you will receive the higher value award.

15 scholarships to be awarded; valued at $30,000, which is renewable. They are awarded to students who: (a) have had to face significant personal barriers, and who despite these challenges, have persevered and demonstrated fortitude and resilience in overcoming these personal barriers in the pursuit of a university education; or (b) are leaders/changemakers who are pushing boundaries by demonstrating commitment to progressive and sustainable development initiatives by making a difference regarding compelling issues of our time (either connected to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (‘SDGs’) or other complex issues). The Tentanda Via Awards are high-value awards that cannot be combined with entrance scholarships. Students may apply to York’s prestigious scholarships – if successful, you will receive the higher value award.

The Faculty of Health and York University also has numerous other scholarships and awards, which can be found and accessed using the Award Search from Student Financial Services.

Awarded to a graduating undergraduate student in the Faculty of Health who has demonstrated academic excellence and outstanding contributions to undergraduate student life at York University. More than one student can self-nominate or be nominated by Faculty, but the School of Global Health will select one nominee to be sent to the Committee on Examinations and Academic Standards. Awarded to a graduating undergraduate student in the Faculty of Health who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and potential through involvement and initiative in Faculty of Health organizations and activities. More than one student can self-nominate or be nominated by Faculty, but the School of Global Health will select one nominee to be sent to the Committee on Examinations and Academic Standards. Awarded to full time undergraduate students enrolled in the Global Health program in the Faculty of Health in association with the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health. The award will be awarded to a continuing international student who has a grade point average of 6.00 and who demonstrates financial need. *Award is currently inactive*
