Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization

Our mission is to promote an academic and social environment that is driven by principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization by fostering collaboration between students, alumni, community partners, faculty, and staff in the York University School of Global Health.

The York University School of Global Health seeks to ensure that principles and practices of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization (EDID) are built into the core of our School’s vision and living culture.

As such, we have organized a new EDID Coalition of Support that brings together students, alumni, staff, faculty members, and community partners to advance our efforts to promote an equitable, diverse, and inclusive academic environment that is shaped by decolonizing principles.

This process started through active and open consultation sessions with students, faculty, and staff that culminated in the inaugural meeting of the Coalition of Support on March 2nd, 2022, with an initial discussion of principles and values, mission statement, and action areas to address EDID.

We invite all students, alumni, staff, faculty members, and community partners to join the Coalition of Support by filling out our registration form. We will keep you informed of opportunities to participate in meetings and contribute to the ongoing work of ensuring that principles and practices of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization are built into the core to its School’s vision and living culture.

EDID Coalition of Support Meetings

To ensure that the York University School of Global Health (YSGH) is living up to principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization, a coalition of support has been created to bring together students, staff, faculty members, alumni and community partners. The coalition’s work will be driven by the principles and values of social justice, solidarity, accountability, and collaboration. Some of the coalition’s objectives include:

  • Fostering collaboration on action areas determined by coalition members to address inequity, discrimination, and social exclusion
  • Raising awareness and fostering discussions on EDID topics and issues among students, staff, and faculty members
  • Supporting the development and/or maintenance of inclusive, diverse and decolonized services and programs for equity-deserving students

Coalition meetings will take place on designated Wednesdays during the academic year and outputs of group discussions will be shared on the EDID webpage. Coalition membership is open to any global health student, staff, faculty member, alumni, or community partner who’s interested in advancing EDID within the YSGH!

The SGH EDID Coalition of Support was convened on February 2nd 2023. After an introduction and recap of work to date, participants discussed options for the structure and logistics of the Coalition, how best to recognize membership in the Coalition, and establishing working groups on initial EDID priorities. Participants agreed to pursue a formal committee structure with affiliation-based representation recognizing current students through the Global Health Student Association, staff and faculty through the School of Global Health Committee, and alumni and community through an organizational forum to be determined in the future. This structure is based on broad consultation over last two years, ensures representation from different stakeholders, and formally recognizes the importance of EDID work through an inclusive structure that encourages collaboration. Initial working group priorities were identified as focusing on trainings & workshops and decolonizing the School of Global Health curriculum.

The next meeting of the SGH EDID Coalition of Support will occur on March 27th, 2024 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM. In this meeting, we decide whether to formally adopt draft Terms of Reference for the Coalition of Support, discuss a working draft of a forthcoming EDID Action Plan for the School of Global Health, and discuss future priorities and next steps. Any students, alumni, faculty, staff, or community members that would like to attend are encouraged to register using this link: https://yorku.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwrcOyorzkoHtCVRgkAolKsTo1JIVyI4ANe.

Conversations of Support for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization

To foster conversations of support for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization, we co-sponsor a Seminar Series on Decolonizing Global Health in partnership with the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research. We will also hold other events and consultations such as a public lecture on Equity, Health and Human Rights and student circles where we seek to listen, learn, and develop a collective platform for action.
